I'm in need for some Albion discussion and today I've been thinking about Chris McPhee.

Can he make it with the Albion or will he be another Wilkinson/Marney?

I think he's technically pretty good and he's very determined. He doesn't seem to have that cutting edge though. You don't get excited when he gets the ball.

I think he could be a decent division 2 striker given a season in a team. He scored quite a few last season despite not being first choice a lot of the time.

I like him. He may not have the experience but I'd rather see him up front than Big Chris. He needs more time.

wherever the money is
Think his chances will be limited as I believe we will sign an experienced 1st div striker to help Leon out. A year out on loan along with super Jake would benefit both players and us.

yes, and for that i quite like him.

my old man and i were talking about this and he says that mcphee's first stride is too long, whatever that means. He reckons he would be a bigger threat if his first stride was shorter. no, i don't understand either.

however, he will never make it for us unfortunately.

Well I reckon he is because he's got a strikers intuition. He's not a give me the ball and I'll put it in striker. He goes to the ball. He'll make late runs or come in on the blind side of a defender.

i take your point about him making good runs, but i don't think that makes him 'techinally good'. His technique in terms of first touch and when in possession of the ball i think is a bit too untidy for him to make it with us.

also, surely 'give me the ball and i'll put it in' IS 'a striker's intuition'?

i would also argue his goals/game ratio would speak against him having a 'striker's intuition'.

Gary Hart does not have a 'striker's intuition' either and is a tryer, but he id more tidy on the ball which is why he has been able to convert to being a midfielder. I don't think mcphee can score regularly enough to be a striker bu couldn't convert to midfield either.

Yeah you're right about first touch. My point was he 'thinks well' so technical in that sense but not in ball control.

I think 'give me the ball and i'll put it in' is a good finisher rather than a good thinker.

good finisher and good thinker are not mutually exclusive but given a choice between the two i would go for good finsher every time.

i'd rather have two good finishers up front than a good thinker who can't finish cos the midfield can do the thinking for the good finishers anyway (well, a good midfield can anyway!).

Hmm. It depends on the service. A good thinker will score goals a good finisher wouldn't by being in the right place at the right time. It's no good having good finishers who don't get the ball.

He is a goalscorer.

McPhee(and Dave Lee) score loads for the reserves. Just like Scott Ramsay, put him in Dr Martens premier level and he would score loads. Similar to Marney I guess.

I don't think he will make it with us although McGhee seems reluctant to release players he sees any potential in.

His goals to games ratio was very good last year... people have short memories... it was only the start of last season he was banging them in, and ousting the awful Henderson... for me, the reasons he doesn't get in the team are (a) his inexperience, and (b) MM wants to play someone who is very big in stature alongside Leon... he deserves more time IMHO...

Let's strengthen the midfield as our top priority... having 2 young and promising strikers as squad members is a bonus... we are not a big enough club (without Falmer) to justify having 4 top and experienced strikers on our books...

Scoring loads of goals in the Dr Martens is no good to us being a First Division team, the difference in class is massive.

I like McPhee because he works hard (and lives opposite my parents) but don't think he's going to be up to it next season, simply because I don't think he's good enough. Definitely, definitely isn't another Wilkinson or Marney though, and could probably do a job for someone in Division 2 or 3.

Which is why I would play hinm upfront with Leo(n) and give the other Chris the elbow.

Not only did Leo score more goals with him, but take Leo's 9(I think) penalties away and give the to McPhee you have new figures of Leo 18 goals, McPhee 18 goals, and McPhee only played in half the games. Very underrated and needs to be given a 'fair' go at things. Could and should become a great asset to us.

i agree with you mr burns if we brought in a better player than big chris we could get rid of him and hace mcphee as back up and send out robinson on loan to crawley

at the start of the season leon scored at a better ratio. and mcphee also got 9 goals whilst playing alongside leon. we were also top of the league at that stage. i would say mcphee was very harshley ousted. and cannot workout why he has not seen much action since. he is very underrated.
and can do some good work in div 1. but i fear he will not get a look in next season in the championship. (sorry not div 1 as said earlier)

Don't agree with loaning him out to Crawley!!... he is a lot better than that IMHO...

with mcphee he tries and always puts loads of effort in. i think he works harder that leon and iwelumo, but is trying hard what we are looking for next season?

for all his efforts, his talents are limited, and although he maybe worth keeping, will he make an impact in the starting line up, or can he change the game coming on from the bench?

even though i like him a career in frog racing or more nights out in the event beckon
