The problem with a zero tolerance covid policy is that the population hasn't built up the same level of imunity that the rest (most?) of the now mainly open again world has. If the C|hinese suddenly remove the restrictions the result could be catastrophic. Dont forget it took us 2 years and a massive vaccination effort, and with a huge percentage of the population having caught Covid before we were nominally back to normal.

Not sure how they now get out of this, without a huge case load and a massive death toll. A slow easing of restrictions and just hope the current varrient isnt leathal, dont forget the reason most of the varients we had werent worse was becuase so many had already had one form or another of it which limited the spread of varients of concern, I am not sure that the Chinese population are in the same position as the rest of us were

Most westerners think our governments are less oppressive etc than governments elsewhere, most Chinese think their government is less oppressive etc than elsewhere, most Russians probably still think the same way about theirs... pretty clear that it all depends on the narrative you've grown up with and the "information"/"education" we're/they're fed with.
It do think it's such a shame you failed to get on that course to Portslade. The last bus to Mile Oak would have been such a lovely gentle introduction and given you a first little step to what the whole of the rest of the world outside your town in Sweden is like

what they should be doing is a mass vacination. apparently they wont because the functioning vaccinations are from the west, so using them would be seen as a weakness to follow our policy. i dont know if this is an accurate summary of policy, nothing else makes sense.

It is indeed pretty difficult to see what they're trying to achieve with it. Unless they know something we don't, it has pretty much (at this point) the same consequences on a society as a bad flu and pretty much the same chances of getting rid of it... not really worth causing massive discontent and economical problems just to try and solve a problem which can't be solved by measures that will cause more pain than what they're trying to hide from.

Guessing its just a question of pride... they want to show the world that they can deal with this and any issue. Obviously they're going to have to back off and just let it flow sooner or later.
Control?

They have a shitload nightmare-amounts of control but if you lock people up to the point where they can't access/afford food and medicines, they lose a bit of control because hungry people are generally the most difficult ones to control... if you refer to controlling the virus itself, well, there's not much indicating it can be done without permanently locking people up which kind of creates other issues.

Ironic that the people (trmptwts) who called this the Chinavirus have now 'moved on' as China reaps the whirlwind of their own fuckwittery.

Where is the conspiracy? In the heads of the dickheads. As always.

It's pretty simple. China is VAST. Abso-fucking-lutely enormous. And with a lot of different cultures from the Han to the Muslim Uighurs, to the prayer flags of Tibet to Mongols. And that's not even touching Hong Kong, Macau and the intentions the mainland still has around Taiwan.

So they need control. They need a government that scares the shit out of people. The alternative is, at best, a copy of the USA and, at worst, a copy of the Balkans in the 90s. And ALL our cheap shit is produced there.

Covid in general is simply a disease we didn't have much immunity to. In 99% of cases it's not the conspiracy control some made out, and, no, you won't die or be tracked by 5G if you get a jab. An acquaintance of a friend now sells crystals that protect you from Covid but the best of them have been "cryogenically treated" - i.e. shoved in the freezer for a few days. An extra £50.

But the exception that proves the rule is China. They are 100% using Covid to reassert control over a land that they were threatening to lose over time. But, right now, it's threatening their control and their finances, so there may well be a change of heart in the post. The elephant in the room being that if their own version of the jab is shit and their rural healthcare is as bad as I think then a big outbreak could still finish off millions.

It is cock up, not conspiracy.

Give any organization a free hand, with no comeback, they become useless.

That's why we have elections.

Apparently.

(When the electorate has too easy a life then, of course, they start electing wrong-uns. Despite all the crises, too many among the population have been living too soft for too long. Those at the bottom in real difficulty have yet to find a coherent voice. Bleating for PR or supergluing yourself to a polytechnic student's face won't even make the lunchtime news).

Hunt and others wanted/want the country to follow Chinas example, thankfully these people were not in power.

Plenty of people on NSC were also very upfront about locking down quicker ...longer... harder.. deeper.

Obviously they all go missing in action/get amnesia once the economic and societal costs becomes apparent.

No of the people…I think it’s been proven the virus can’t be controlled

The World Cup being shown in China has been said by some to have been a trigger point….people watching others …enjoying themselves…maskless ..no social distancing…no hordes of medical staff in ppe close by etc etc

Besides not being able to get the over 80s to vaccinate the real problem in China is that its vaccine is so poor compared to the ones we had and there is too much face loss in admitting it.

It is fine to have a lockdown policy to buy time and lives until a vaccine program is established, but if your vaccine is relatively useless then you are a bit stuffed.

I bet the "high-ups" in China have had western vaccines.

And of course we have the people who didn't give a shit about other people during COVID indeed just didn't want their day to be spoiled by having to wear a mask .

Quite. I think that was the issue, not anyone calling for a China style response.

Old discussions now but masks or no masks, outcome was very similar. There's very little indicating that wearing or not wearing a mask had any major impact.

Who’d’ve thought anyone would ever be looking longingly at Qatar and thinking “I wish we were as free as that”.

Xi and his cabal will see that the protesters, especially anyone organising it, simply disappear. Females taken will be systematically raped in camps in the NW. Given the same treatment as Muslims and HK folk speaking out.

6,000 miles away … the genocide etc that’s easily forgotten.

The current Chinese government love any excuse to lock their people down.

Why go to the trouble of releasing a virus from a lab in Wuhan if they’re just going to let their people go back to freedom within two years?
