Central Heating

I need a bit of NSC advice/assistance.

Just been told by British Gas that my central heating system is blocked and that it needs flushing. They can do it but it’s a day’s job and would cost £700! However, they could probably do it next week or early the week after which is something at least! My other alternative is to look at a new boiler etc as mine is quite old and inefficient but this would obviously cost a lot more than £700. I’ve asked them for a quote for the boiler just in case and at least it gives me a starting point although I know British Gas are usually expensive.

So, can NSC recommend any central heating engineers in the Mid Sussex area that are good, won’t cost as much as British Gas and are likely to be available for either the flush or the new boiler in the not too distant future?!

If the boiler is over 10 years old then you're going to be throwing away £700. Get some quotes for a new boiler if you can afford a new one as it will save money in the long run.

Can I ask how did you realise it was blocked? Just curious as since we started turning ours on a couple of weeks ago the pressure bar has been rising into the red all the time - Ive bled the rads a couple of times which brings it back down to normal - but it creeps up again, sometimes when its not even turned on. Could mine be blocked too do you think?? Sorry if it sounds a stupid question but I know nothing about stuff like this!

Pretty much anyone is better than going through British Gas.

Your central heating being blocked means the problem is all on the water side, so if you're a bit handy you can have a go yourself without blowing the house up.

Check the filling loop - it may have a slight leak through. Should have 2 valves you can turn off on it so do both, probably the one with an easy to use lever is a bit off.

I'd noticed that the hot water hadn't been as hot as it usually is but as I say the system is quite old so is a bit temperamental so didn't really think anything about it. However, tried to put the central heating on yesterday and nothing happened! At the moment I can still get hot-ish water but that will eventually get blocked too!

I think you can pretty much assume that anyone who calls out British Gas when they have a problem really hasn't much of a clue about these things and is certainly not very handy!! :lolol:

Also if they are flushing it in a day they are doing a shit job. Flush it, run for a couple of weeks with cleaner/sludge remover in, flush again and refill with inhibitor added.

I should be a plumber.

Do you have any insurance scheme thing with them? They said the same to a friend recently, as it's something not covered where they could earn some cash before doing what was needed. If you did need it done, don't use BG.

Yes, I can recommend a nice Mid Sussex chap to do it at a decent price. I expect you'll get offers here, so pm me if you want the details.
