Apparently large groups of them were singing "No surrender" at Northern Ireland fans at the Millennium Stadium on Wednesday.

Politics not a strong point, presumably.

Was it? Or was it the media reporting? I do not know, just at times the press do get the wrong end of the stick.

No, it's from a Welsh mate... who, incidentally, was in our end for the play-off final and said it was the best atmosphere he'd ever heard in the Mill Stad - and he's been there for a lot of footie and rugby.

Oh and the same guy is best mates with a bloke who works in Prescott's office.

So what do the Catholics do in NI? Play that funny hurling game?

Yes, Catholics/nationalists in Northern Ireland do follow hurling (its not funny Lush, its deadly serious..) and gaelic football; when it comes to football/soccer, most of them tend to support the Republic if anyone. And the standard explanation that i get for this is that they dont want to support a team for which they'd feel afraid going to their own home matches. There are of course other, perhaps more obvious reasons- flag, anthem etc.

Which is a bit of a shame in a way beacuse some of Northern Irelands best players have been catholics- Martin O'Neill and Gerry Armstrong to name a couple..

There is at least one historically catholic team in the Northern Irish league. Can't remember what they are called, though.

Many of the Northern Irish catholics support Celtic; of course, rather a lot of the Protestants support Rangers, too. Ah, the pleasures of bigotry.

I think the team is Cliftonville, although i could be completely wrong. There used to be Belfast Celtic, but they were disbanded in the 1930's or 40's following persistent trouble at matches.

Yes, bigotry is an all too familiar and recognisable feature of the Old Firm, and particularly the Northen Irish support of the clubs. However, i think its a tad unfair to dismiss the Catholic/Nationalist supporting of Celtic as completely their own fault, you could argue that they were virtually forced into it. The basic fact is that for many 'Catholics' Celtic is the most friendly and accessable club. As i was trying to say in my last post, many just dont feel at all welcome or safe at football grounds in the North. A major reason, of course, why Derry City play in the League of Ireland.

>>>Also I notice there was nothing in the press about the 'seat exchange' during the send half in Katowice on Wedneday.

This will soon be an Olympic sport to be known as 'Stadium Seat Volleyball' this was an official trial run of the sport and that's why the press did not report it in detail. As is standard with the press though, the cameramen were only taking photos of the English team and completely ignoring the Polish team who were serving.

:lolol:

My mate who was there said it was because people were in the wrong seats and rather than the people moving, it was easier to move the seats.
