Can we have a 'Cut n Paste' forum?

Got something to say or just want fewer pesky ads? Join us... 😊

It's struck me recently that there has been a tangible increase in the number of threads where the first post is simply an article from another website. The only thing original is the title of the thread.

Why do people feel the need to do this? Surely in this hi-tech world of multi media people have enough resources at their own fingertips to find out things for themselves without being spoon fed often totally un-Albion (or even football) related topics.

If I want to know the latest washed up celeb making an arse of themself in Soho, or read about which old Argus reporter has topped themselves then I'll look in the relevent place.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be any off-topics on the main board, but simply cutting and pasting articles from elsewhere is just lame (not too mention probably in breach of all manner of copyright laws).

Same goes for email forwards. We've all seem them before.

Plagiarism:
What It is and How to Recognize and Avoid It

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is Plagiarism and Why is it Important?
In college courses, we are continually engaged with other people's ideas: we read them in texts, hear them in lecture, discuss them in class, and incorporate them into our own writing. As a result, it is very important that we give credit where it is due. Plagiarism is using others' ideas and words without clearly acknowledging the source of that information.

How Can Students Avoid Plagiarism?
To avoid plagiarism, you must give credit whenever you use

another person's idea, opinion, or theory;
any facts, statistics, graphs, drawings--any pieces of information--that are not common knowledge;
quotations of another person's actual spoken or written words; or
paraphrase of another person's spoken or written words.
These guidelines are taken from the Student Code of Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct.

To help you recognize what plagiarism looks like and what strategies you can use to avoid it, click on the link and scroll down to the appropriate topic.

Would you have known he was an old Argus reporter, or even that he lived in Hove if you were not pointed towards it?

No Safeway, it does not need a reply, there is a difference.

This trash on the other hand is a pure waste of time and space, ever heard of hypocrisy?

Actually, this link is worth reading.

That's bollocks and you know it. Even when people have nothing sensible to say they'll make some sort of comment. Anything to get the post count up.
The fact 'your' thread got, hmm, ZERO REPLIES, means it was probably a case of people looking out of curiosity, thinking "wow", and closing it.

I would read that again if I were you and see if you can work out the flaw in your own argument.

May i remind you of the Big Brother twaddle that you were involved in, it destroyed the way some people wanted to use this forum. I did not try to stop you lot of sad people doing it but had to change the way I used the forum in order to continue doing so.

Now what you are saying is, I don't want it for this purpose, I want it for the purpose I want it for, If I am not interested in what others are using it for I will complain about it and suggest they not use it for that purpose.

Safeway you post most of the worst drivel that this board has ever seen. How about you stop posting rubbish? Like this thread for instance. Oh of course twats with no life want to get their "post count up".

If you have no interest in a subject, and I suggest proper use of the title thread will give you a clue as to what you want to avoid. Then you don't read what you have no interest in. That way normal intelligent interaction need never darken your sad mundane life.

End of subject as far as I am concerned.

I seem to remember you making your feelings quite clear on the subject at the time. Wasn't my idea so you can't blame me for it for a start. Agreed it didn't work but at least it kept a few of the more "sad" people off the main board, thought that would have pleased miserable fuckers such as yourself.
Anyway, what's wrong with trying new things? It didn't work, so what? A week later everything was back to normal, no harm done. Get over it, seriously.

marvin said:

*head hits brick wall* NO. What I am saying/asking is, why do people have to just cut and paste whole articles from other websites? Chances are they will find out about it anyway. This is a discussion forum, not a news site. When you copy an article you are not offering an opinion, you are just repeating what someone else has said. Get it?

marvin said:

The first two sentences there are your opinion. Well done, at least you're getting the 'discussion' thing. What I will say is that all of my "drivel" is well labelled. You know exactly what the thread is about so can immediately make an informed choice as to whether or not you open the thread. Cut and pasted threads are frauds.
Why is thread rubbish though? It's raising a point and so far it's produced some semi-coherant debate. The whole point of a message board, no?
Believe it or not there are people that are actually bothered about their post count. If they weren't it wouldn't be such a constand bone of contention.

marvin said:

As explained above, that's exactly what I already do. It's cut and pasters that are often fooling people.

marvin said:

Err, exactly where was was the "normal, intelligent interraction" on your dead journo thread? NOWHERE, that's precisely the point I'm trying to get into your thick skull.

marvin said:

WRONG. Now it is.

dwayne said:

I think you are making a reasonable point, dwayne.

I think Safeway is making a reasonable point.

And Marvin is making a reasonable point.

I disagree with one or more of you. But - at least as far as this mod is concerned - I don't think it's for us to intervene when handbags start flying. The mods only tinker with posts when it's necessary to protect the integrity of NSC. This argument certainly isn't one of those occasions.

Far from being "jobsworth stewards", most of the time we're leaning against the wall, doing bugger-all.
