Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt is reportedly on his way to Newcastle United, according to newspaper reports.

The England midfielder is believed to have held talks on Tyneside with Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson.

The 28-year-old is seen as the ideal replacement for Gary Speed, who at 34 and with one year left on his contract, is near the end of his playing career.

Despite the mounting speculation, Robson refused to be drawn over Butt's future.

"Transfers are club business," said Robson. "I can't talk about other club's players. It would not be right."

Butt put in a transfer request at Old Trafford this week after becoming frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities.

Despite the player's reported desire to stay in the north of England, Newcastle could yet face competition for Butt's services from Premiership rivals Tottenham.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is being pushed by Tottenham Action Group to sign the player.

A spokesman for TAG told the Sun newspaper: "It has been widely reported that Butt is for sale and it's no secret Spurs need a combative central midfield player in that mould.

"Therefore, he is exactly the kind of player who should be considered by the board and identified as a real transfer target - especially as the fee seems reasonable."

Newcastle are set to sign Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt after the two clubs agreed a fee for the player.

The 29-year-old midfielder is flying home from United's US tour to discuss personal terms with Newcastle.

The move is subject to a medical but Butt's 13-year career at Old Trafford appears to be over with the fee thought to be in the region of £2.5m.

"We have agreed terms pending a medical and Butt's own terms," said a statement on Manchester United's website.

"Nicky Butt has left the Manchester United tour of America," the club confirmed.

Newcastle have been trailing Butt for some time and see him as an ideal signing following Gary Speed's move to Bolton.

Butt has won six Premiership titles as a United player and is firmly established in the England squad.

He has made 387 appearances for United, the last as a late substitute in the FA Cup final win over Millwall at the Millennium Stadium in May, his second triumph in the competition.

He also starred in the 1999 Champions League final triumph over Bayern Munich, playing in the centre of midfield after Roy Keane and Paul Scholes were both ruled out through suspension.

However, a series of injuries and loss of form meant he was no longer guaranteed first-team football at the club.

And Butt almost left Old Trafford in January after manager Sir Alex Ferguson reluctantly accepted a transfer request.

Birmingham had a £5.5m bid accepted and Middlesbrough expressed an interest but neither could persuade Butt to join them.

However, competition for places in midfield have intensified over the summer following the arrival of Liam Miller.

United are heavily stocked in midfield with Butt competing against Phil Neville, Eric Djemba-Djemba and Darren Fletcher as well as regulars such as Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Roy Keane for a place in the team.
