After a conversation in the pub yesterday with a lettings agent, he informed me that he has had recent issues with insurance on bungarooshe built housing, and that when repairs are needed they will not pay out.

The advice was to check the small print, even if you have renewed.

Half the properties in Brighton and Hove are constructed of bungaroosh!

Its flint, sand, cobblestones, railway sleepers, stones all the shit they wanted to get rid of basically so they used it to construct buildings and walls out of it in the mid 18th to 19th century.

Its hard when set but lets in water and therefore crumbles and fails which is why you see so many cracks in buildings in Brighton around the windows etc. because it moves.

Brighton was one of the places it was used most I think - when I was managing properties in Brighton and Hove we had loads of insurance claims settled though

Here, there and everywhere
Yes, you could destroy 1/3 of the houses in Brighton and Lewes with a well-aimed hose pipe (but don't tell anyone - it's something not many of the mortgage lenders have cottoned onto yet).

From this article: "By the way, don’t stand in a Brighton bay window (as opposed to abow front which is usually OK) since the weight of the bay is often taken through the window frames on the outside. The only thing tying the bay back may be a couple of 6 inch nails pulling the bay back against joists running across the building"

Also, be wary of buying those houses covered in black planks, they're another recipe for disaster.
