go to the Grand Place ,many cafe's there that have beer menu's. Try the kwak beer and also you can see the famous statue in the corner of the grand place of the young boy having a piss....cant see the attraction myself but its bloody popular with the tourists.
If you want to escape from the overpriced madness of the Grand Place (Ok it IS pretty) the try this bar:-
Morte Subite in Rue Montagne aux Herbes Potageres
Very traditional. Wash down your Croque Monsieur with a bottle of the very local and traditional Bruxellois beer called Geueze. Its an acquired taste - most people think it tastes like mouldy scrumpy but it really grows on you. The local equivalent of Harveys is Cantillon, who brew this bizarre stuff somewhere near Anderlecht stadium (I think).
Sorry but I hate this dirty city. There are much better cities in belgium than Brussels.
Go to Gent,Brugge, knokke these places are much better and also the people are nice
i went to brussels and had a great time, it's not an amazing city but the beer makes up for it!
for clubbing go to dirty dancing in the north of the city (i think). i saw slam and riton rock it a year ago - it's an old cinema with revolving dancefloor - odd but great club.
i found a small area with about 3 good bars about 5 mins walk off the main sqaure (i think north east direction). sort of minimal bars with the customery 15 taps, it was good compared to the tourist places closer to the square.
the mannaquin pis is in a nice area of lanes-esque twittens and worth a walk around, plus you can pick up a variety of classy souvenirs such as a european union flag, atomium shaped chocolates and various pieces of lace for wives/mothers/grannies 'cos they love a bit of lace.
i took the metro to heysel to pay my respects, it is close to the aforementioned atomium and the europark land - a strange attraction with minitures of landmarks of the european states (i never knew bath was so close to the houses of parliament!). the highlight of that trip for me was having my picture taken with the europark mascot, a 6ft turtle suit cladded lowlander who smelt a bit funky.
lastly, head out of the main square for steak and mussels (no, that's not a gay club) where i found a few nice restaurants serving brussel classics for not-tourist prices (the espresso was ace - i presume because the restaurant was run by north africans)
oh, and the 'special' beer from the brewing museum was not great - for a week i thought a hard stool was an uncomfortable chair.
If you like live music see what is on at the AB or Vorst (Foret), both are excellent venues...there is a third called something like Cirque Royale, can't comment on that one as I haven't been there.
