I was reading the results at the World Rowing Championships yesterday in the paper (yes i was bored) and noticed there was about 20 or 30 different disciplines (sculls,coxless4s,2s etc etc).In a full column of results(about 40) there was not one British name mentioned or British team represented.

Anyone else been led to believe we rule the World when it comes to rowing?

we have never ruled the world. We have only ever had one or two at a time, and they usually rowed with Steven Redgrave. We won the eights at the Olympics, but that was an exception.

If anyone wants to participate in a fantastic sport, get supremely fit, and you have a competitive spirit ..... I recommend rowing. Especially for you Landan boys. The Tideway is the place to row.

Did I tell you I raced against Steve Redgrave once ............

Much underestimated as to exactly how fit you have to be to row. I used to row for Shoreham and the training was harder than anything I did for the football team I played for at the same time.

............ there is no comparison. Winter training starts September and is intended to get you for for the summer regattas. Two weights/circuit training per week, rowing Saturday and Sunday, and a run or swim on the other days.

In the summer we rowed two nights a week in preparation for the weekend regattas.

It is a great sport. Do not expect to watch much footy though.

I rowed at Henl....

I hadn't seen sea rowing till I came down to Steyning. I saw them off Worthing. It looked like a peculiar form of English madness to me, with the waves breaking over the splash boards. I went down to Shoreham to see if they had an old codgers crew- they had , they train almost every day, and race almost every weekend.

Not just Thursdays and Sundays then ?

Yep. Respect to coastal rowers.

I know waht you mean DKM. My one of my brothers-in-law is a rower, he's 55 and is INCREDIBLY fit, he's got muscles like coiled steel. Dwayne would weep.

I know of a few in Shoreham, you see them caning up and down the river, blatant disregard to the port authorities speed limit, just having done the bath tub race I can vouch for how bloody knackering it must be

....... you only hear about it when we are doing well. A bit like the triple-jump. Now Jonathan Edwards has retired we can call it hop-skip-and-a-jump again.

If you want to get fit - go and row. Forget going down the gym and standing in front of a mirror. Life can be more fun.

and you need to be able to swim as well !

I do think rowing is seen as a toffs sport, and Oxbridge makes that even more apparent . . . .

the only rowing you see in working class areas are Trisha's in white stilletoes on the dancefloor listening to black lace or what ever

.............. like most things though Zef, it is not the whole story. Public Schools row, and as you would expect, have fantastic facilities. Universities row, and the top race is Oxford v Cambridge, although London University can have better crews. There are Tideway Clubs (such as Thames as Fulham) which are considered toffs clubs, but there are many clubs who have people who simply love the sport. The photos of Henley don't help, but that has little to do with the rowing.

You have the build for a rower. You should try it out.
