"UK drivers who are caught by speed cameras, exceeding the speed limit in European countries, could face up to £640 fines in the new plans.
Member states have been given new powers to track down UK motorists and hand them fines.
The EU directive will cover eight motoring offences including speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, and using a phone while driving.
Due to a legal quirk however, European drivers caught speeding on UK roads cannot be pursued by British police.
European countries will be able to obtain drivers’ details through the DVLA database."
