At least Alan puts himself about...him and the Wonder Scouse - Rooney would be brilliant together and if we are intent on hoofing it up front then at least we will have someone who holds the ball up.

Tell you what Dave - why don't you ring him up and ask if he wants a game? I doubt Sven ever thought of that. :glare:

No no no. Shearer is not the answer. He had his day. Don't forget how many times he used to get criticised.

Rooney had a good game? Showed a lot of inexperience in going for the penalty rather than squaring it to Vassell which would have avoided the need for the penalty.

I would have rather seen Owen and Shearer up front

He would have had trouble passing it while being completely hacked down!

I thought Rooney played well with what he got.

Balls to his feet were few and far between, but he did look positive and showed the appetite to run at players and at least take players on, which was sadly lacking in Owen's game.

Do me a favour Marshy, can you let me know when you want threads to be posted on to a FOOTBALL MESSAGE BOARD SITE and then we can all post them when you say so...

Perhaps we can start a thread something like...Marshy has agreed to start a thread thread!

Shearer is not to play for England again. He's said so, many times.

We're stuck with what we've got.

Bringing Shearer back would be going backwards.

We have two excellent young strikers. Rooney was very good last night. While Owen despite playing poorly is a decent player who will still come good for us in the rest of the tournament.

Dave I agree with you entirely .... but as Saint Alan of Wallsend has made himself unavailable the combination of Beattie or Sutton and Rooney would also be an interesting option

Because he and his ilk can hold the ball up. Surely it was obvious to everyone who saw the game last night that in the second half we were screaming out for someone to take the ball down up front, hold it until the midfield trudged up from defence and lay it off. Rooney is too inexperienced to do that and Owen thinks he has to beat everyone on the field before he passes it ( a bit like Defoe)

If wanting a player ( alright suggesting Shearer was tongue in cheek) like that in the team is stepping backwards, then I for one would like to see Nat Lofthouse playing up front.
