Got off the train, one of the gates to get onto the station was closed so everyone trying to force their way through one gate, steward said station overcrowded, hardly anyone there, never happened before real safety hazard with everyone trying to push their way through one small gate.

There is a stand off outside the station presumably Brighton and Reading, loads of police and all traffic stopped.

Fair enough shame steward couldn't of said as much rather than blame overcrowding.

You assume a few stewards on minimum wage know what is going on? They just get told to open or close the gates

No surprise really. I think the platform entrance at Falmer is another potential death trap!!!!

Funny thing was they decided in their wisdom to open the gates just as another train arrived from Falmer right when the police were escorting Reading round the taxi rank area. Police soon closed them again. They were probably 30 seconds from another standoff on the station concourse. Quick thinking by a policeman saved the day.
