Anyone know the history of why Bakers Bottom is so named? Rochester, Hendon & Bute Street just off Sutherland Road.

I've heard tell of an old bakery there (Grooms? ) but can't find anything on t'internet. Interested to know as trying to buy a house in one of those three streets.

We have a copy of that and nothing in there either. Cheers anyway though.

I'm sure a Palace fan will be able to furnish a hilarious and poorly spelled answer.

I have no idea but yes, it's a fair bet it has something to do with a bakery

'bottoms'are geological features in Sussex. Have a look on an ordnance survey map and you'll see plenty. I think they are low areas between hills. Perhaps this place in Brighton relates to that ?

I have studied the history of the local area, but don't have an answer for this one. I would imagine that Baker's is a reference of ownership to a family title. The area was built around the original furlongs that existed. The houses in the area would been erected from about 1860 onwards and completed around the turn of the century.

Hm, found this on the net earlier. Maybe it's one of those QI type questions where the answer is "Nobody knows"

Hendon Street is part of the dry valley area of Brighton known as Baker's Bottom although the exact origin of "Baker's Bottom" has been lost in the mists of time.
