it's to cut the emissions. doesn't take any more fuel to start regularly, though it'll be caning the battery. chunky things in buses, i'm wondering how car ones hold up where this is done.
I have a Volvo XC60 and this has an option to auto-stop the engine. This only happens if all of the following is true.
The clutch is not depressed, and the vehicle is stationary (hand-brake doesn't have to be on) and the battery has at least 70% charge
If all of these are not the case, the engine auto-stop does not activate.

I'm sure these new Coasters are not as powerful as the original ones, seem very slow on the big hills between Eastbourne and Cuckmere valley area

Will be interesting to see how the 701 Stagecoach bangers get on.....
The 701 has just started service. I just love the idea of new services, but I just don’t get it. It goes hourly from Brighton to Eastbourne (shame we’ve not got a service that already does that) but decides to go via Falmer, Lewes (bypass), Beddingham (but doesn’t stop there), Newhaven, and then on the route of the 12 to Eastbourne. I just don’t get the point. Where it’s not duplicating the 12, which is the bit up the A27 and down the A26 it stops at about three stops between Falmer and Newhaven, avoids population centres like Lewes, and doesn’t even help hikers who want stops in the countryside. I’ll give it a year.

Excellent
My question: how on earth does a double decker successfully get up Furze Hill and along Temple Gardens?
Is that one of the trickiest routes to get the double decker up?
Interested to know any that are worse…

This is an excellent question - especially considering the 21 route is in both directions on Furze Hill and Temple Gardens. The 21 route seems a challenging drive in generally, it's not a picnic getting up around Goldstone Valley and then Manor Hill is a challenge too, plus the Furze Hill section.

What if the clutch isn't depressed but is just a bit fed up?

On the 21s the worst is Vine Cross Rd/Swanborough Drive Junction. The double yellows are needed to position the bus to allow oncoming traffic to pass from the other end as you can’t see it around the corner. However someone now parks there with a disabled badge as they are legally entitled to do, so reversing or driving on the verge is common.
