Bomb Threat

I have just been told that there was a bomb threat phoned in against our company this afternoon. Being only junior management I wasn't told. Personally, I reckon everybody should have been evacuated as I naivley beleive that a companies first responsibility is the safety of it's staff.

The Police have been in, and we all wondered what was going on when there was a sudden sweep of the building. We have now been given the all claer, apparently they did not want to panick anyone by letting it become public knowledge. Surely by letting off the fire alarm, everyone would have thought that it was a practice and left the building sensibly and safely.

What the f*ck is wrong with this business obsessed country, that companies would rather rely on the hope that something is a hoax than risk losing some productive time. W@nkers!

Having done a course on security. I can say that things like bomb hoaxes are a judgement call, sometimes an unexpected fire alarm can cause more trouble.
Its up to the head of security on site to call it. I sympathise with your veiws, but an automatic evacuation on every hoax is a recipe for trouble.

Remember the Grand National.

That's awful, but I'm not surprised.

I used to work for Ladbrokes and a manager of one of the betting shops - a friend of mine - was subjected to a terrifying attack at gun point.

My mate, was off sick for weeks due to his nerves being shot, and eventually he had to change jobs because he couldn't face working in a betting shop again. He'd spent years working his way up to store manager and it was suddenly all gone.

It was all on CCTV but Ladbrokes told him they were not releasing the tape as they "didn't want to demonstrate how easy it was to rob a betting shop."

Oh that's okay then.

When I worked for the electricity company we had several bomb threats.
Mainly from anti-nuclear protestors who thought that threatening an office full of clerical and administrative staff was going to close nuclear electricity plants.

Each one was a hoax but was taken seriously and evacuations did take place.

Volunteers were asked to go and search the building for 'stange objects' It was noticeable that men were reluctant to do such a search and on one occasion a pregnant lady volunteered shaming several of the men into volunteering

looney - sounds similar to some of the stuff we were told on an emergency staff course a few years ago. As its easier to place a bomb outside a building than in it, one way to get the most victims is to place a bomb outside a building, call in a threat and then detonate the bomb as the building is evacuated, cuasing more casualties than if everyone had stayed inside.

Soton Seagull - according to how these things are taught your management did the right thing (unless they legged it while everyone else stayed indoors?)

Sotn Seagull i think you may well have a claim against the co. for the trauma cause by them and yes id be ****ing angry like you its an utter disgrace and i wonder whether you have a union that could step in to speak on the workers behalf? It is surekly a civil right for workers to be told this and also ask the co. wot insurance get the wife girlfriend mother granny whoever to give em hell asking what insurance liability payout would been given had an accidents or wosre occurred and their judgement call on this was obviously wrong. I think you can claim when its say public transport bomb hoax on a statio platform etc its very slightly different but not so when you are employed. Id take em to town ovrer this, why not organise a strike yourself or get the union to do that assuming there is one if not now may be a good time to get a union recognition the fundamental point here is you were NOT given freedom of choice.
