Blayney ready to extend stay

by Andy Naylor

Albion are poised to solve their goalkeeping problem by extending Alan Blayney's loan for another two months.

The Southampton shot-stopper will reclaim the No. 1 spot once Wayne Henderson's loan spell from Aston Villa ends on November 1.

Albion tried and failed to buy Blayney from Saints in the summer after the Northern Irishman had a successful loan stint with the Seagulls at the end of last season.

Henderson was brought in instead, initially for a month and then for two more.

The Seagulls re-signed Blayney for a month when a back injury ruled Henderson out of the September 17 home draw against Coventry.

Henderson immediately regained his place but Blayney, whose current loan expires with Albion's next match against Cardiff at Withdean on October 15, is content to bide his time.

Manager Mark McGhee revealed: "When I brought Alan in I expected him to play three or four games because I thought Wayne had a bad injury. He only played one game and Alan understood I had to be totally fair to Wayne.

"If you miss one game you come straight back in, if you miss three and somebody plays well you are in danger of losing your place. Alan accepted that and was prepared to sit it out until the first of November when he would then be able to go into the team, which is great."

Michel Kuipers, still recovering from an injury, and French loanee Florent Chaigneau will fight it out from mid-December when Blayney has to go back to Southampton.

McGhee will then decide in the January transfer window whether to make a permanent move for Henderson or Blayney or both of them.

Both.
I still have this niggling feeling that Michel will not recover enough. It is tragic and I have loved him as our keeper but that injury was so bad.
