I have no idea about the origins of these terms and how these most recently founded capitalist holidays on steroids came about in the UK, but it's amazing that so many people fall for it every year.

Typically, these big businesses will raise prices in advance of these occasions, and use various methods to disguise what the cheapest prices have been in the past.

Leading up to the 'events' there is hype all over social media and advertising, the anticipation making consumers ravenous and determined to take advantage of what they consider to be fantastic deals. Sometimes for Xmas presents, but more often than not, for themselves.

Price 'reductions' are presented in a way that seem like incredibly good deals and ones that we are likely to miss if we don't act immediately. eg. 'Was £249.99, now £149.99!' or... '65% off!'... Limited time only! FLASH sale!.. Only 19 remaining!

Of course, it's not ALL a con, there will be good deals out there, as some retailers are able to accept a smaller than normal profit from a specific product. However if you are to benefit from this you need to really, REALLY research what you want and what its true retail value is now, and has been over time...

Don't get tricked into buying things you wouldn't otherwise buy, just because it is presented as a fantastic deal... because it probably isn't one.

I may have mentioned this before but my wife worked in Tesco about 20 years ago. She came home one spring morning saying they had some sunloungers on offer, 75% off, we had to buy a couple. 'Since when have you sold sunloungers?' I asked, 'never' was her reply, 'so how can they be 75% off?'.
Tesco would have had them full price tucked away in a store somewhere for two weeks at full price then filled every branch with the deal.

In other news, it turns out the Pope is catholic, Dolly Parton sleeps on her back and you don't want to know what bears do in woods

https://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/ is a useful resource to view the historic prices of Amazon items.
'Keepa' is my preferred choice. It automatically loads on any product you look at as part of the page and shows price history for that product if on the website or share the item to it on a mobile.
