No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.

Dare I suggest its another demo by the so called peaceful protesters we had in Brighton on Saturday. McDonalds & M&S all on one site then pop round the corner to Uncle Sams for their Veggie Burgers

Now you mention it, I did hear them, and just thought "fireworks". Didn't puncture my consciousness apart from that - I think I was feeding the cats at the time and it takes a lot of concentration.

Tony Bloom banging his head against a brick wall after reading that season ticket allocation for his £90m stadium is 'unfair'?

They might have been maroons to signal the coastguards? When I lived on Shoreham Beach as a kid you could hear them from some distance off, and the coastgaurd station isn't that far from north Shoreham and Hove as the sound flies.

Or 'Patch of Weeds With A Fence Around It' as it's more commonly referred to.[/QUOTE][

Nope, wasn't. I remember the old maroons (not sure if they still do them), but this was much louder and definitely not near the lighthouse.
