On our way to Wales for a week soon for a family holiday, anyone recommend anything to do there?
Been looking about and excellent choice of Castles but unfortunately my Wife & daughters aren't as enthusiastic about them as me!
So is there more to Wales?

Er, where, you're going to have to be a bit more specific... It takes all day to drive from the bottom to the top. I've climbed snowdon 3 times and it's beautiful but ALWAYS rains.

Sorry, going to Presteigne in Powys. Right near the border so if the natives get hostile I can always retreat.

Ah, in that case... Go to Hay on Wye (provided you like reading). There are about forty second hand bookshops, some of which are big enough to spend a day in. Stayed there when we played Hereford away last season.

Elan Valley is good for scenery.

Think you're about as far from all the castles and towns as it's possible to be... very remote.

You're barely in Wales. If I was in Presteigne, I'd find it impossible not to head back into Shropshire and visit Ludlow and Bishop's Castle.

If I wanted to go deeper into Wales, I'd go back to some of my favourite wild places - Llangynog and nearby Pennant Melangell and Pistyll Rhaeadr - but they're getting on for 60 miles from Presteigne.

Good shout.
They'll be BEGGING for castles after that.

We went the other side of the Brecon Beacons recently with two kids.

They got bored by the castles, walking, gardens etc, but enjoyed a day in Cardiff Itry going to techniquest in Cardiff Bay and the Dr Who exhibition also in Cardiff Bay. The open top bus tour is also a bit of a laugh.

We also had a good day out at Oakwood Theme Park

home

and the National Showcaves

The National Showcaves Centre for Wales

I am also told that the Big Pit Experience is very good too, but we didn't have time to get there.

Generally driving and walking around the Brecon Beacons is very pleasant too.

Thanks for the suggestions, Mrs Egg has come up with going up Mount Snowdon on a train.
I have 'stated', quite boldly I may add, that I AM going to Cearnarvon Castle, looks about a 3 hour drive but it is a serious Title Contender in the Castle Premier League.

As Lord B says, that barely counts as Wales. I don't really know that part - apart from Hay, which is a bibliophile's dream - but there is (or at least was) a pub serving fantastic food near Abergavenny. It's called The Walnut Tree Inn and it's in a place called Llandewi Skirrid, I went there about 10 years ago so it could have changed.

I went on a fishing holiday in Wales and it was a bit up and down.. most of the locals hated the English despite the millions pumped in to the Welsh Development Agency. In the local bar there was only one single woman and it was obvious where the sheep gags come from. There were some nice beaches for fishing and I did drink in Brown's Hotel in Larne or whatever it was called where Dylan Thomas was " Regularly Ratted" according to a local.
