I think he deserves it. Ok so he is getting on, but he's served this country well and deserves his 100th cap.

He should get his 100th cap, and if he isn't figuring in Capello's plans, he can always bribe him,
Capellos Italian, so bound to take the bung and Beckham can afford it.

Not worth debating, he has given great service for England and deserves it.

Absolutely! One of the best and most passionate players this country has ever produced. it would be an insult to English football if he didn't add to his tally of caps.

Same thread, so I'll do the same post (almost)

No, of course he shouldn't be picked. Its this type of sentimental old bollocks that holds us back. An England cap should be earned, not dished out as some kind of commemorative baubel to signify a nice round number of International appearances. He shouldn't even be on 99 - its only because that goon Eriksson picked him for every single game REGARDLESS of form or fitness that he's got anywhere near. Personally I got heartily f***ed off with the usual pre-tournament proclamations from Beckham about being "fully fit" or "in the best shape of my career", only for him to stink the place out (along with the rest of the team), and then reveal (surprise !) he was carrying something.

f*** it. Capello is building a NEW England team now, and His Royal Beckness won't be a part of it playing on the other side of the planet in the Harlem Globetrotters Burger King League for Washed Up Has-Beens. Does the WHOLE THING have to be turned into yet another Beckham spectacle ?

He's not kicked a competative ball in M-O-N-T-H-S. Only in this joke of a country thats so obsessed with "celebrity" would the likes of Beckham be indulged like this on a national stage. I'm desperately hoping Capello is above all this crap, and will pick a team based on its merits, and treat this match as proper PREPERATION for the World Cup qualifiers, not as some star-spangled, glitzy homage to a player who has already ruled himself out of serious, competative football for what remains of his career.

Rubbish. "only in this country" my gusset. I watched a WORLD CUP FINAL that 'starred' a player who was a confessed gimp, and yes - the Italians LOST, of course, to Brasil..... though only on pens.

Maradonna would get a game for Argies NOW if he just said the word, as would Pele for Brasil. So no, you are wrong, completely off the mark that we'd be the only country sentimental enough to play a (deserving) star who's passionate about his country.

Not that he's proven unworthy either, as one of FEW players in recent years who plainly places England as top priority, and hasn't 'retired' regardless of the crap way that complete useless undeserving TURD of a manager totally dropped him out of the team from being Captain, then had to admit he was clueless - all the time doing his best to politically save his own face about it, before the TRUTH made him HOLE!

I'd give the managing job to Becks right now, in the light of the credentials England management has required in recent years. The new bloke's record isn't too far removed from mClown's, in dropping Beckham to prove a point at Madrid, then eating shit for exactly that.

So Easy, unless your post is one of your most brilliant ironic jokes - it's not only factually wrong, but also without perspective.

On the basis of old appearances in poor performances - well, no-one would ever get another cap on that stat.
If you said about his lack of competitive matches, his removal from the battlefields of Europe, or his average ball-juggling skills, at least you might have had a point.

Sorry, I thought I did that as well - its there if you read it.

Pele to Brazil and maradona to Argentina - those were collosal players who at times almost single-handedly WON things for their countries (although perhaps stretching a point to say they'd get a game now). Whats Beckham done for England compared with those two ? Popped in an equaliser against Greece after the rest of the team had contrived to f*** it up twice, to scrape us into the 2002 World Cup. Then what ? Every major tournament when we've needed a collossus such as the legends you mention, Beckham has been HUGELY conspicuous in his absence. He's not alone in that, but please don't try to tell me he is like some mythical being who's very presence exudes an aura of greatness - he ain't THAT good fella.

Giving him his hundred caps will appeal to Beckhams vanity (as the match will of course be all about him), and it will satisy the misty-eyed fans who want to say "I was there" and pretend they've seen a legend. But it'll do f***-all for the England team in the short term OR the long - and thats all I give a shit about.

So what if it is sentimental? It's boys own stuff and that is what sport was once about. He deserves it if only for his treatment after France 98. But he has done loads for England since then and he was a good (not great) captain.

Not sure what his vanity has to do with that. By that standard no player should ever be capped, well maybe Peter Crouch, cos they're all pretty boy vain bastards these days.

Your heart just be as cold as these january nights!

The hundred-cap campaign IS one of vanity. Its just so contrived. I can see the aftershave range now - the "Becks 100" - costs a f***ing fortune, looks great in the bottle, but then when you actually need it, it absolutely stinks the place out.

I want to see the new England manager stamping his authority, using friendlies as proper preperation, and actually building us a TEAM - starting with a fully functioning midfield. Beckham should not be part of that - whether he's on 99 caps or 199. Cold hearted ? Perhaps. I just think I have other priorities.
