Bayern confirm sale of Hargreaves

Bayern Munich have agreed to sell Owen Hargreaves to Manchester United.

Club president Franz Beckenbauer told German TV: "Owen is leaving. That was the player's wish. It's a good match and it's also a good deal financially."

Beckenbauer said the transfer fee was "in the range" of £17m - which would be a record for a Bundesliga player.

Hargreaves, 26, has been at Bayern for 10 years but after starring for England at the World Cup last year, he admitted he wanted to play in the Premiership.

United quickly moved to open negotiations with Bayern and made offers in the summer transfer window and in January but the German club refused to sell - until now.

Hargreaves is expected to sign a four-year deal with the newly-crowned Premiership champions.

His Bayern career ended in disappointment when the club finished fourth in the Bundesliga, thereby missing out on Champions League qualification.

Writing in his column for the BBC Sport website, Hargreaves admitted the club "can never afford to not qualify for the Champions League".

His transfer is likely to be the first stage of an overhaul at the club after chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge ready to carry out "brutal and ruthless" changes to the team.

Sunday's newspaper reports suggested Bayern could use the funds from Hargreaves' sale to buy Chelsea winger Arjen Robben.

17m seems alot , has he been that good for Bayern , thought he was not a star just another player for them ?

Reckon he can play with Carrick , Since being at Utd Carrick gets forward alot more than he used to .

Looking forward to seeing him

Funny that, I thought that Fletcher had had a fairly good season, the only thing that was holding him back was that he is Scottish (from an international point of view).

Hargreaves had a decent World Cup last year but I still think for the money they are talking, it is absoultely obscene :shootself

Fletcher is not actually a bad player. He has the odd good game, against Roma for instance. It's just that he's not good enough to play for United regularly. Doesn't make him shit.

Fletcher could do a job at a mid table premiership team, but he's not good enough to be at United. He's been a useful squad player though.

I don't really see why Utd have been so determined to get Hargreaves when they have Carrick and Scholes in centre mid. The 3 of them will form a strong midfield when Utd play in europe using the 4-4-3/4-5-1 system, but who will get left out if they want to play 4-4-2? They should have put the money towards a 30 goal striker (although it's looking increasingly likely Klaus Jan Huntelaar will be going to OT this summer anyway)

Richardson is wank.
Fletcher is quite good.
Carrick has his moments...not quite sure how Hargreaves will fit in, as they play exactly the same role?

Oh well

Man utd play 50-60 games a season. That's enough to give Hargreaves, Scholes and Carrick 30+ starts a season each plus appearances from the bench. Should be enough to keep them happy...

Not quite the same role... Carrick is a defensive mid, but more of a playmaker than a holding midfield.

I think long term Carrick will end up playing where Scholes does, especially as he doesnt have a bad shot on him.

Fergie likes using the 4-5-1, so can see the three of them playing together sometimes, particularly in Europe.
