Happily now the job is complete. Just waiting for delivery of replacement seat.
Things I think I have learned:
1. Try and avoid overtightening the bolts if possible.
2. Hacksaws are good at cutting metal and are sharper than they seem.
3. Hold the piece of metal being cut with pliers rather than fingers.
