Banana Liqueur - BE WARNED !

Dear oh dear, what a disappointing end to a marvellous Saturday evening.

After the NSC Meet-up, myself, Easy10 and a couple of NSC voyeurs (They read, but rarely contribute) went back to a friend's for more drink and some drunken PS2 gaming. The whisky was flowing and the banter was top stuff. Then Chris offered round his "Banana Liqueur." Oh how, in hindsight, I wished I'd politely declined and continued with the whisky. But no, the bravado of drink sent me diving into the strangely tasting stuff.

Within an hour the evening had come to a close, and I wandered upstairs for the night. Getting undressed I felt a little queezy (not that unusual when I'm undressing) and rather tired. Started rubbing my eyes, I realised my face was feeling slightly swollen. As the minutes passed I could literally feel my face infalting like some sort of balloon. Feeling I needed to know the extent, I went into the bathroom to take a look.

 OH MY GOD, I looked like the elephant man, as my face had swollen VERY dramatically. What do you do? Well I had a go at dousing myself with cold water, but that really wasn't having much effect. In fact nothing was having much effect.

By the morning I was looking slightly less scary but it still had the look of coming a distant 2nd in a boxing match. Drove home, and went to bed for the day, and it's only now beginning to look like clearing up.

Clearly I had a major allergic reaction to something, and the Banana Liqueur seems the most likely. Either that or I am allergic to Safeway and it just took a while to react.

What a night - I won't forget that in a hurry.

dear me - same thing happened to my sister with mango once.... she blew up like a puffer fish - at the hospital they said that in sever cases it can actually close your wind pipe. In my sisters case she is allergic to some little part of the fruit just under the skin - so she can actually eat the flesh just not touch the skin - weirdly!!

So be careful mate - its always a good idea to head off to the hospital if it causes breathing difficulties....can't take chances - glad you're ok now

Wow, I'm scared NOW Tedebear, I didn't even consider that. The Doc has booked me if for some alleregy testing to try and check out exactly what it was in that stuff that set me off, but I never thought about the windpipe. Jesus, that would have been nasty.

Falmer, soon...
Sounds like you've got a Kiwi Fruit allergy.

The chemical in Kiwi Fruit (actinidin) is also prevalent in bananas.

I know this because I ended up in hospital with the same.

Might be you're alergic like me, it's supposed to be 3% of the population or something.

Also be careful with Pineapple.

Bloody hell Gritty - I certainly regretted the banana liqueur all day yesterday (and the whisky), but at least I didn't have to contend with morphing into some kind of balloon-faced freak, what a nightmare that must have been. Normally if you've got excessive swelling by that stage of an evening it can be taken as a good sign, but not like that. I trust you are back to rights today

I only have vague recollections of that golf competition, but I still woke up with a sense of burning injustice at your splendid shot to the edge of the green outrageously being called "out of bounds" and effectively costing us the match on the final hole. By that stage, I think I was drifting in and out of conciousness, and didn't get my key in the front door till gone 4am.
Top night all round though.

Actinidin eh? I'll watch out for that. As with Tedebear's sister, if it is that it's strange as I've never had a problem with bananas before. Maybe it is something I've just developed. Or perhaps I am always slightly puffy, should have a pencil thin face, but I keep eating those pesky bananas. Who knows?

That's right we woz ROBBED. Despite your good self only rousing yourself from your drink induced coma when required to play a shot, and 3 (yes THREE) 'straight in' putts lipping out, we had hung on manfully. Then for my sublime approach to the 18th to be called 'out of bounds' when on the fringe of the green, well what more can you do?? I think it was a moral victory for us.

There was one very funny moment when Chris nailed a hole-in-one, and he lept around the room looking for congratulations only to realise Julie had gone to be and you and Colin were fast asleep. I think that's what they call, pissing on his parade. :lolol:

I used to eat bananas too, still do from time to time.

You'll notice a kind of dry mouth if you're sensitive to actinidin, particularly in very ripe bananas. This is a mild anaphylactic reaction and will subside in 10-15 mins. Try one and see if you notice it.

you were a trifle that way inclined when I said hello
I do vaguely recollect some kind of guessing game with one of the Bints, where I think I failed miserably to guess your name. Many apologies Tedebear, I think you caught me during one of my more fuzzy moments in the evening.
