It’s all irrelevant as for me the first yellow was a red anyway. Watch it again, once he realises he’s overrun it then Rice isn’t even looking at the ball, he’s looking at Veltman. Rice is a shitehouse on the pitch, far away from a ‘hard man’.
I've seen very few references to this but I think it was a factor in the second yellow. The first foul was a borderline red but the ref didn't give it. Having seen him kick the ball away, the ref was in no mood to give him the benefit of the doubt again.

I'm not a football ref but I am a rugby one and I've certainly given players the benefit of doubt after a dodgy but of play. If they do it again, then it's time for a little rest on the sidelines.

We saw something similar in the Utd/Liverpool game when Mainoo committed a foul, wasn't booked and then did it again a few minutes later. It was pretty innocuous but he got the card.

Obviously, I don't know for sure but I reckon it was a factor in Rice's card.

Whatever. I'm still enjoying the salty tears from north London

A Brighton fan phoned in on TS yesterday morning and gave his view on this. Souness disagreed, said he was talking tosh, called him a fool and disregarded his opinion because he hadn't ever played the game at rhe highest level...even these so called pundits are rattled.

Sourness has been anti-Brighton, since he came off early in the FA Cup and Ryan and Connor scored to beat them….

Brighton factually.....

That was a day of unbridled joy, as Connor rushed through the Goldstone fell oh so quite....

Then pandemonium, and a cheer that could be heard in Chichester and Rye.

Your post has the same tone as I’ve seen Crawley fans adopt re the Matt O'Riley incident.. it’s very obvious why they feel so annoyed. We'd be outraged if it was the other way around. We’ve benefited from the situation. Best just to keep quiet rather than goading their fans even further.
The incident where one of their players deliberately injured out new £25 million signing 6 minutes into his debut and put him out for 6 months? Compared to an incident their player correctly got a yellow for?

I think it’s difficult to compare the two situations.

I saw that, I just wished someone had reminded Souness that he hasn’t played or managed for years. The game has changed since that dinosaur was last involved.

Also the amount of people saying that it wasn’t a red card and shouldn’t have been sent off - well they are correct - it wasn’t a red card sending off offence - it was a yellow of which was his second so two yellows make a red - unbelievable the amount of fans and so called experts just don’t get it

Love this. Presumably he disagrees with Hurzeler starting the season unbeaten, drawing to Arsenal away and beating Manchester United, because he never played at the top level in the 80’s.

Absolute dinosaur. This was the guy who said RDZ would fail with us because he hadn’t managed in the PL before. Despite the fact that the majority of the most successful PL managers of all time hadn’t either - Ferguson, Guardiola, et al.

Er, no. Gloating over a horror tackle is not the same as being amused that the fans of a massive club are getting their undies in a polka because their 100m player got played. Also what are their “goaded” fans going to do - force the Arsenal players to be more clinical in the return fixture?

Most of these internet trolls never go to the games and just need to get out more (or get a girlfriend).

Middle aged men moaning to the nth degree over what is still essentially just a game. Sure most of this is done for clicks.

Of course it wasn't. It was a 2nd yellow. I've seen a lot of comments in the press questioning whether it deserved a red card, which it didn't, but that misses the point as it didn't get one. It was cumulative. For balance I have also seen quite a few articles critical of Rice's stupidity.
I think that was @HWT’s point

I listened to the Arsenal podcast "Handbrake Off" yesterday. It's one of The Athletic's club-specific podcasts, this one with Amy Lawrence (very well-respected journo), Adrian Clarke (Arsenal player from the 90s and long-time pundit/journo), and Ian Stone (comedian, mate of Alan Davies). Three very sensible individuals, one might have thought!

Their take on the whole Rice-gate incident included the following:

- The ref should have used "common sense" (nb: but they want consistency)....
- The authorities should be able to review red cards in cases where the sanction is the result of a second yellow (and in this case, if such a process was in place, Rice's second yellow would obviously be over-turned)
- The further one match ban in THIS case is disproportionate....in particular because it will cause Rice to miss the North London Derby (which is not fair!)....AND because Arsenal are already suffering from an injury to the obvious Declan Rice replacement, namely Merino, which makes it DOUBLY UNFAIR!!

It was difficult at times to know whether they were deliberately parodying themselves, so ludicrous were their arguments!!!

I'm not sure how we'd react if the roles were reversed, but I'd like to hope that there would be at least ONE Brighton fan who understood the rules and the way they were applied. Anyway, the rest of the podcast is actually quite interesting in that they are pretty critical of the way Arsenal reacted after going down to ten men.

My Dad was born in north London and grew up an Arsenal fan. He passed his love of the Gunners on to my brother (but obvs not me - phew). Despite these family links, I really, really hope Arsenal do NOT win the title. The events of Saturday have made me realise how unbearable it would be to see Arteta and his crew of over-priviliged players (not mentioning the fans) parading through Islington! In fact, it would be wonderful if they missed out by 2 points again :)

I find Arsenal fans to be the most annoying, self entitled fans in the Prem. People give a lot of stick to Man Utd fans, but I think nearly all of them accepted the goal to put them 2-1 up against was offside. I've always found Man Utd, Liverpool, Man City, Spurs fans to be pretty sensible. Chelsea fans are a pain because you know they're new fans who didn't follow them when they were s***. But Arsenal fans just live in their own little world. Remember they were calling for Wenger's head despite qualifying for the champions league every year. They really are something else.
