Four merciless torturers - who committed one of the worst crimes in this area in living memory - have been jailed indefinitely.

As reported, they subjected a vulnerable woman to "horrific" physical and sexual abuse, slashing her with a craft knife, binding her to a chair, repeatedly punching and kicking her and violently sexually assaulting her.

Yesterday, Judge John Reddihough locked all four up - telling them they will not be released until they are no longer a risk to the public.

The sadistic torture happened in what the prosecution branded a "house of horror", on Grimsby's Guilford Street.

Peter Theaker (33), of Newmarket Street, Grimsby, and Thomas Hoban (43), of Clerke Street, Cleethorpes, denied assaulting and falsely imprisoning a woman against her will, causing her grievous bodily harm with intent, sexually assaulting her and causing her to engage in sexual activity without her consent, between September 2 and 6.

But they were convicted by a jury of nine women and three men after an 11-day trial at Grimsby Crown Court in February.

Toni Hewitson (32), formerly of Buller Street, and her girlfriend, Sally-Ann James (35), of Guildford Street, Grimsby, had earlier admitted those charges.

Theaker also denied raping the woman but he was convicted by the jury.

The frightened woman suffered a catalogue of horrific injuries after being kept prisoner, the court heard.

The four were all given indeterminate sentences. Theaker must serve a minimum of eight years and the others five-and-a-half years.

Theaker, Hewitson and James will have 231 days deducted from that for their time spent in custody and Hoban 230 days.

Judge Reddihough told the four: "The victim in this case was a vulnerable woman. For a period of some 24 hours, she was held prisoner in James' house and subjected to the most appalling physical assaults and sexual abuse.

"She was punched and kicked and stamped upon. Her face was slashed with knives. Letters were carved on her forehead. She was tied to a chair and gagged for a period of time."

He added: "It was a most horrible catalogue of physical abuse.

"It's hard to believe any human being could participate in such wicked acts towards another human being.

"The victim was left with physical scars. Much worse will be the mental scars left by her dreadful experience at your hands - scars which are likely to last for the rest of her life."
