are kids today spoilt?

after reading hineys thread about buying and i-pod for his kids birthday-

Do kids get too much and expect too much?

when I was a kid my parents never had much money but I was happy with cheap and second hand toys.

will we have as generation of kids growing up expecting too much out of life?

Maybe we do, I heard my neice talking about putting her birthday money towards a digital camera, she is 7. Think it just shows how times of change, I sometimes think that some kids today expect everything at once, whereas I either waited or didn't get it at all. Guess it depends how and where you were brought up, my parents had very little money when we were kids, as a result we were all brought up to appreciate that if you want expensive things then you have to work hard and earn them. Like you we had cheap and second hand toys, also hand me down clothes from neighbours, didn't do me any harm in the long run, if I buy something expensive I look after it and make it last.

There were always kids who had more than everyone else. I remebber going to a lads (must have been about 9th birthday) in around 1966 and he had a battleship model that fired rockets. It never occurred to me those types of presents were available to some kids.

But then, I had it tough.

when I was young there was always one or 2 kids in my class who had all the toys etc, there was one kid who had every star wars figure.

There is a 9 year age gap between me and my sister when she got to being a teenager my parents started become better off, she has had and done loads of thing I never had/done,

she is now 20 and has no respect for anything material and dosnt seem to appreciate things that my parents do for her.
