[Sussex] Are gingerbread men sexist?

Just been to our local bakery to get a sweet treat for my nephew who is visiting us today, asked for a gingerbread man and told it was now a gingerbread person, to be honest I felt very silly. The kind lady behind the counter explained that the term gingerbread man was deemed sexist and we couldn’t define whether it was a man woman or gender neutral.

Why ? What have they been saying ?

Wouldn't it be nice if they could just give you and everyone else what they ask for? Be that a gingerbread man, gingerbread women or gingerbread person...... it's not hard is it and no need for a lecture. Fully support having more than one shape or decoration to include everyone, but that's the right distance to go I think rather than over the top.
