You get a better selection of channels if you get a combined digital / F.M.model.

I had a 'The Bug' (made by Pure ) for Christmas. Pretty good, alien space robot thingy. You can 'rewind' the last 5 mins of a live broadcast and store programmes on a separate memory card too.

Clever stuff, bit OTT but quite good fun. Be warned. The only thing they couldn't quite manage was a decent, reliable off-switch mechanism. That's design stylists for you...

I'm thinking of getting one and dumping my FM tuner - the Intempo PG-01 DAB Digital Radio looks a reasonable bet at £79 - any recommendations?

I got that for Christmas - very good!

Panasonic RF-D1 has great sound with stereo speakers and a sound equalizer. Also has FM radio as well as DAB. I paid £120 for mine last year but now available for around £80

Digital radio is 2 seconds slower than analogue.
It was being discussed on Radio 2 today. Someone had an atomic clock and realised the 'pips' were out.

Similar thing with our Sky tv. We only have normal tv in the kitchen, but if someone is watching the same programme in the lounge we know whats happening about 3 seconds earlier in the kitchen.

That's right, as with all digital technology there is a "compression" process that goes on prior to the signal being transmitted. This "compression" basically squeezes more channels in the available space (or bandwidth) that was available to the ordinary "analogue" system.

Your radio also has to uncompress the signal.

This causes a delay - ever flicked between terrestrial tv and SKY ?

I should know this - I work in the television industry - but still I went out and bought a portable digital radio to listen to SCR at the game. Useless, goal goes in and you get the commentary two seconds later. Sound familiar Seagulls World subscribers ?

But - I listen to alot of radio and usually have with me a tiny analogue FM radio (with an MP3 player built in) and my small digital set.

Digital seems to be a lot more resistent to interference on the train. So I get a clear SCR after the game on the train back to London. Until I hit Gatwick and the thing switches over to London stations.

( Local BBC radio is available on digital - but only locally )

One point to make about digital. When the reception is good, its fantastic. When the reception is bad - you get NOTHING.

The battery life on the portable sets is very bad indeed. You can't economically run one without rechargeables.

Thanks Donkey. Based on this I brought a Panasonic RF-D1 from dixons for £84. It's very good but here in Seaford some DAB stations reception is poor (eg Talksport/BBC R3/R2/R1) but others ok.Thanks for the rec.

This may sound a bit strange but try the radio in different rooms. Upstairs at the front of my house I usually pick up 36 channels which includes all those Hampshire. Move downstairs to the back of the house (a good 20') and only get around 24. Also, reception today is a bit iffy because of the weather. If you try retuning on the next nice day, you might pick up more.

Thanks again. Live in a bungalow so a bit restricted. However am getting better reception on west of bungalow presumably because that's facing the Brighton transmitter.
