I liked the tiny ripple of polite applause when he thanked Bush

I don't think George was a bad person, and I think he was doing what he thought was best for the US. That's his job. He gave us a lot of entertainment, but he also connected with millions of working class Americans in a way that most in the US political village could never dream of achieving. Most people will slag him off for going to war with Iraq, but back then, I was quite happy for us to go and get rid of Saddam. I guess nobody expected Al Quaeda and the extremist Islamic loons to flock from all over the world and use the country as a religious battle ground in quite the way they did. He may have made some mistakes, but he was poorly advised, and I guess he was a bit of a puppet for the arch neocons behind him, in my eyes the real evil in America. George, you meant well. Thanks for your efforts. Hope you enjoy your retirement on the ranch.

And that is why he, and indeed you it seems are completely f***ing stupid.

Saddam had no allies in the countries around him. Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Israel, Egypt, UAE, Syria - all these countries and more wanted to see him out. The Iraqi people (apart from his few close cronies) were also happy to get rid of him. The actual war against Sadam was swift, and the celebrations across the country from all ethnic and religious groups showed that the country wanted regime change. The problem came when different groups then started to claim power for themselves, aided by foreigners (principally, Iran and Al Q), which quickly turned violent. The British and Americans were trying to rebuild infrastructure and train the authorities to manage the country. The extreme violence from terrorists - mostly external - was indeed a surprise to both the British and American governments, the international community at large, intellignence agencies and indeed Iraqis themselves. They had no love for the foreign insurgents, as has been shown by the unity and success in getting rid of them in recent months.

But the intelligentsia warned about that, before Bush sent the soldiers in.
In a mere few weeks he was crowing about a victory, and he swatted aside every wisdom to the contrary -
at an extremely high cost which may yet become ever more catastrophically high.
