Anyone else received the text about the reason for Gary Speed's death?

Had it from three seperate sources, if true very sad, but if not the dangers of the infomation network, a person has been named and if he's innocent how does he get the chance to defend himself properly?

This was going around on twitter for 24 hours. The gossip monger who started the rumour has now admitted he made it up. Sadly many people believe these rumours and it goes to show the power of social networking sites.

I just wish this would all stop.

FFS even if there is a "scandal" to come out, then presumably Gary was sufficiently horrified at everyone knowing that he felt he had to take his own life. If we could wind the clock back wouldn't we all rather sit him down and say "look Gary, if it matters that much, we'd rather not ever know. PLEASE don't do this to you, your family and everyone who loves you."

It's this sort of desire to dig up dirt, stories, rumours and half-truths that causes so much pain and anguish.

This is a great and very much loved public figure, and his death shocked and upset us all. Can we PLEASE just let him rest in peace. All of those on here who typed "RIP" on a Gary Speed thread, think about what that means, and if it's those same people who are scurrying around for a story somewhere, then hang your head in SHAME.

The most important thing now is Gary's wife and kids. It is totally out of order to speculate or spread unconfirmed rumours. The footballing world has lost one of its Sons in very tragic circumstances. Please lets stop all this and let the guy rest in peace.

All of this and more. Just stop with the rumours.

Well said.

At the end of the day, it is absolutely none of anybody elses business and I only hope that this constant rumour mongering does not result in the family having to announce something that they would rather have kept private.

I don't think the family helped themselves when they absolutely refuted he had depression. The only logical explanations were that something Speed could not live with, would come out or he had clinical depression. So by denying any link to depression, people assume the former. They should have just said nothing. You do not go and hang yourself on a whim and with no explanation whatsover to make any sense of it, people will speculate, thats the way it is.

I'm just pleased that whatever the rumors, they're not being posted on this thread. Just leave it. If there's anything of truth to come out, we'll all find out eventually, but spreading rumors does no one any good.

give em a break - he's just killed himself and you're criticising their immediate (reported) response to the press. People don't need to speculate and the family shouldn't have to factor how a bunch of sad fucks will chatter into their grief

Rubbish, Gareth. The way this story was reported was actually very refreshing, I thought. There was very little, if any, talk about depression or why he might have done it. All that happened was a outpouring of grief and then for once the papers didn't revert to form but discussing why he might have done what he did. Only those with viscious minds would speculate around this awful, shocking tragedy. The family were, quite rightly, left alone to grieve.

Spot on. I hope it's a template for future tragedies like this, but I've got a feeling that the media's reluctance to run the usual speculation and muck-raking stories was more to do with the ongoing phone hacking enquiry rather than any sudden outbreak of decency. They want to keep their noses and hands clean at the moment.

Yes, I agree. One can only hope it's not just a blip for them and maybe, just maybe, they learn some respect.

I disagree, I think the family should have made no comment at all, thats all I am saying.

Isn't Lenny Rider Ian Hart? I would have thought he would be far more sensitive to this sort of thing, considering his occupation and refrain from further spreading idle gossip?

Who really cares about what happened? Parents have lost a son, a wife has lost her husband and two young kids are going to grow up without their father.
