Anyone else gone DVD mad?

Always been quite into films but never been madly into owning them - believing there is not much I want to watch many times over.

Because of this, I'd never bothered with a DVD player - reasoning I would wait until DVD recorders were more reasonably priced.

Anyway, a short time before Xmas I bought a DVD/hard disk recorder and it's a wonderful bit of kit. Main purpose was to be able to cut DVDs of my daughter for the grandparents who are back in Sussex.

Since then I have gone DVD mad and amassed about 50 films, which averages more than 1 a day, and am continually looking for more.

Anyone else gone DVD crazy who either was or wasn't into film ownership much before?

In the days of VHS I rarely bought tapes as like you Bozza I believed that once you had watched a movie you rarely watched it again... and by the time you did want to watch it again it was on TV.

I got a DVD player about 5-6 years ago, cost £500 and have amassed a large quantity of DVD's.

I now also have a DVD recorder that I got back in October, started transferring Albion videos onto DVD, as they have no copy protection (purely for my own use). Disney & BBC videos have macrovision coding and will not transfer !

I have a huge number of vids and a huge number of DVD's. Its not me that watches the over and over its my son and always has been.

I started about 4 or 5 years back, just wandered in to Virgin and saw 5 videos for £20. I thought that looked like a bargain and it just started me off. Bought a PS2 about 2 years ago and that started me off on DVDs. I have far too many films, but I just love it. I also have a Blockbuster video just down the road and can pick up ex-rental DVDs really cheap (I got Pirates of the Carribean for £9 on Friday).

Godfather Trilogy on DVD is a must have.

Football, films and music. I no longer have to wonder where all my cash goes.

Years ago in the days of VHS, my mate would buy loads of films and I always asked why he bothered. I never once bought a film on VHS - like you Bozza, I couldn't see the point. I got a DVD player about 3 years ago though, and now I've got probably about a hundred DVD films (I'm pretty selective about the ones I buy, mind).

I guess I never really bothered with VHS cos it was clunky and the picture was only ok-ish. Now, with the image perfection of DVD and the 5.1 Surround Sound too, I wouldn't be without it, or my movie collection. There's certain films I can view again and again, and its nice to relax and watch a film on DVD that maybe you havn't watched in ages.

Only trouble is, the missus is ALWAYS telling me to turn it down. Whats the point of having Surround if you're not gonna crank it up ?

Top Gun is one of the best for 5.1 surround sound and cranking the volume up !!

Cheers Manx, I'll bear that in mind. Off the top of my head, some of the best 5.1's have been:

Black Hawk Down
Phantom Menace (the pod race shakes my whole house)
Gladiator (clang)
Phone Booth (dig how they throw those voices around)
Pearl Harbour (eeeeeeeeeuuuuurrroooonwwnn....BOOM)

I am only buying music stuff, and the Lord Of Rings extended versions so far - I can't imagine buying any other films, particularly.
If I see Clockwork Orange on sale perhaps.

Still, the silly thing is, even the DVDs I have bought, I am having trouble reaching for them and watching. I have a BB King one I bought over a month ago that's still in the shrink-wrap, and a WHO 'Kids Are Alright' with extra stuff that's also been sealed since I got it last week.

Real life seems to be rather compelling and time-consuming !

I got a DVD player (an old Encore 450, for those who care about these things) a few years ago, but I've sold my of the DVDs I've bought, and currently own about ten. It's worthwhile owning DVDs for a while for the extras, but I still don't tend to watch them more than two or three times. And then I sell them.

The good news is that DVDs (especially non-blockbuster films) are very good at retaining their value, and it often works out cheaper than renting them.

I was ordering the films that were out in the cinema at a rate of nots and had amassed about 100 in a year, I've slowed down a bit now and at last count I was up to just under 400 DVDs. I've replaced allt he videos with DVDs of films I like and got rid of mos tof my VHS tapes, apart formt he Albion ones which I can't get on DVD.

It is a total addiction and I can't get out of it. So much so that I am now on my second DVD player in the lounge and recently bought one for the bedroom and with my PS2 and my PC I can now watch DVDs in al the rooms in th ehouse apart form the kitchen. VERY SAD

Im amazed that there are people that feel the same way! Hardly ever used my VHS and owned 2 videos, both Only Fools & Horses. Within a week of getting my DVD player last year Id bought a few and still buying. Never seen Top Man, it was the second DVD I got mainly because of the surround sound. Its the nuts. Interestingly I might purchase a few of the titles above. Not desperate to get them but theres nothing better than a film with quality sound. I was watchnig the darts through surround sound a couple of weeks ago, anyone else done it?!

I got a Philips DVD70RW (think that is the good) for £279 from Curry's in Lancaster. My parents have a Sony which sells for £299

The difference: -

Mine will record on DVD+R and DC+RW discs which are cheap

My parents will record on DVDR and DVDRAM discs. The DVDRAM discs are considerably more expensive than DVD+RW discs. The Sony unit also has time slip enabling you to watch the prgramme whilst still recording, pause etc.

Both will record in different settings allow a disc to hold from 1 hr to 6 hrs. At six hours recording the quality is similar to VHS.

Whats the best offers on DVD recorders lately? Cheapish and best quality? Anybody know?

Watching the footy on surround is pretty good. Commentry out of the front central speaker, crowd noise out of the side & rear speakers. Makes for a better atmosphere than Withdean in your own front room (mind you, there's a better atmosphere than Withdean in my front room when Eastenders is on). Even bloody adverts are 5.1 nowadays.

For some reason Comet have been doing Lord of The Rings, Fellowship of the Ring 4 disk extended version for £7.99 when most other shops have it over £20. Asked the wife to buy me 10 so I could knock them out on eBay but she only bought me one.
