I have promised Mrs Glover a trip to Canada next year. Flying to Vancouver and then going on a cruise. Anyone been to Canada or Vancouver in particular, is it any good ?. How long is the flight as I hate flying and am trying to justify a 9/10 hour flight.

Canada is a great place. The people are extremely welcoming and the culture is incredible.

Never been to Vancouver personally, only Toronto, but i am told its a wonderful city to visit and there is loads to do. Get out there i reckon me old mucker.

One day i'm gonna try to live in Toronto.

The flight to Vancouver should be about 9/10 hours as you say.

My missus lived in Canada for about six or seven years so we are going back there next year so she can show me wher eshe went to high school and al that sort of thing.

She lived in Brantford outside toronto and only 30 minutes for niagra which is handy.

nice cheap hols as her familly lives out there and we can stay with them for free.

Gareth -

If I was feeling mischievous, I'd recommend Canada for its tall buildings, beautiful bridges, superb subway systems and exotic foreign food.

:)

But, in truth, I've never been there. And, if I did go, I'd probably want to see the wide open spaces.

Whatever you do, don't lose your specs.

Back in Sussex
Worked in Montreal for 4 weeks last year. Great place - loved it.

Like Australia it was somewhere I was not interested in and wouldn't have paid the time or money to go to myself, but having sampled them both through work, will certainly be going back.

Food - very cheap, women - very beautiful, weather - better (as they have genuinely hot Summers and cold snowy Winters).

Heard a lot of good things about Vancouver too.

Been to Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal......the flight time is about 7 hours so you can add on another 2 or 3 if going to Vancouver.
The people are really nice, and I have always felt most welcome when visiting......................You will have a real good time Im sure .............Enjoy.

Aaah-Brantford...hometown on Wayne Gretsky. Other than that? It's not too near Hamilton which is a bonus

Went to Vancouver/Vancouver Island/Whistler this summer. Superb.

Brief highlights - hire a bike and cycle round the sea wall of the superb Stanley Park.
Get the ferry across the harbour, then a bus, then the cable car up Grouse Mountain.
Head for Victoria and get a Zodiac (rigid inflatable) trip out to see the Orca whales (asuming it's the right time of year - would recommend Seacoast Expeditions).
Head up Vancouver Island to Pacific Rim National Park and little village of Tofino.
Whistler only an hour and a bit away from Vancouver for almost year-round ski-ing, good bars, and lots of shops.

I want to go back right now!

Canada most certainly is God's country-having lived in GTA for 16 years or so (when it used to be called Metropolitan Toronto).

Great place to live, work, eat and play. Shit, I'm homesick now!

Only thing missing is the Albion but if you're only on holiday it ain't a problem.

Some excellent beers to try-not the crap they try and pass off as Canadian beer in the UK. Americans get pissed very quickly on it:lolol: Great pizzas for not a lot of money, excellent choices of foods from around the world....you'll love it.

Oh - flight will be a bit longer than that I think... more like 12 hours on the way out, less coming back. Not sure exactly because we went via Houston to get a cheaper fare with Continental Airlines.... stupid route... avoid if poss.

We are due to spend 3 nights in Vancouver and then go on an Alaskan cruise.

I really want to steel myself and get on the plane. I can cope with a 3 hr flight to the Med as I can get pissed for the flight but its a bit much to get pissed for a whole 11 hour flight.

I might have to get some knock out pills from the Doc.

Its a once in a lifetime trip and I wish I was't a Dennis Bergkamp.

DKM - the cross Canada railway is the 2nd choice. Fly to Toronto for 2 nights, 11 days on the train and fly back from Vancouver will set you back around £ 3500 for 2.

Vancouver is excellent with a great deal of things to do and see. When I go to seattle I fly to Vancouver and get a hire car and drive down (~2 hours each way). The hotel from Twin Peaks is not far away either if you were into that. Vancouver island is well worth a visit. Kipling described Victoria as like Brighton with the Himalayas as a backdrop. Whistler is good if you are into skiing and I met my first bear in the mountains their. Horseshoe bay is a delightful place to spend the day (when its warm and dry).

Stanley park is a great place and its worth hiring bikes to get around as its quite big. Also, its worth going up the harbour building for the 360 deg view. Gastown is fun at night. I went on a US aircraft carrier in the harbour there once and a small Canadian frigate - its a very international port and a northern gateway to the far east. The city itself sprawls a bit outside the centre just like anywhere else.

Highly recomended but don't take the plane that stops at Toronto on the way if the journey time bothers you.
