I am an insulin dependent diabetic and as such have to reapply for my driving licence every 3 years. Today came the news that i have failed the latest vision field test and can no longer drive at the ripe old age of 45. anybody got any experience of similar and how successful are appeals? any help gratefully received.

Sorry to hear that, when I initially got my license it was only for a year but it's now been extended to 3 years, I can now drive but don't have a car.

I think the right of appeal is to be re-exammined (either once or twice) before getting a final decision - I believe that is what I read in one of the booklets

Sounds strange, mate. How long have you had diabetes? Any long-term complications, like retinopathy or maculopathy that have actually affected your vision? I would've thought that unless there are serious problems with your eyesight, a test with glasses would be enough to get you another three-year renewal.

I've had type 1 for 27 years and now have maculopathy, but my vision is ok in itself, so no problem with driving.

Good luck mate

have had diabetes for 37 years and had a couple of laser treatments in distant past about 17 and 10 years ago but have had several reapplications since them with no problems each time. The letter sent by dvla gives no detail to the exact problem very vague but to the point ie don't drive and your licence is revoked.

although I am diabetic I have never driven, but most certainly sympathise, I would have thought your doctor would be your first port of call as he will have all the info and would be a sympathetic ear.
best of luck mate
