Its because the two triangles that make the diagonal (hypotoneuse??) of the main triangle are not the same angles. The way that they are arranged means that in the first picture, there is a slight inward dip meaning that the total area of the whole triangle is slightly smaller than in the second, and I'm guessing that the total of this area is equal to one square.

COMPLETE guess by the way!

Thiis is obviously the gap in the Huddersfield defence through which our midget striker crept.

Falmer, soon...
the inclines of the triangles are different.

Red is a 3 / 8 incline
Green is a 2 / 5 incline

To Red should be 3/ 7.5 to be the same slope.

I would do the maths, but can't be arsed.

spot on

Yes, I noticed the intersection of the top lines through their boxes differed. There is an element of optical illusion created by the onlooker's requirement to examine the triangles by numerical order to their box areas rather than the way the coloured create a unified triangle of same surface area.
Therefore the missing area is in the lowered line in the top triangle, whereas the same missing area is nicely cubed in the lower one.

The three corners of the triangle are in the same place on the grid, so this leads the eye into thinking the triangles have the same area.

Now stand up and look sideways down the top slope of the triangle. The upper slope curves inwards and the lower slope curves outwards. The difference in area is the empty square.

Why dont most people spot this? Because the presence of the grid forces the brain to work in straight lines and not curves.

Having just spent the last 45 minutes trying to figure out why The Championship wasn't on ITV at 10am this morning when the paper and Radio Times online says it was supposed to be on at 10am I'll count myself out of this one. Clocks now put back.

:dunce:

Not quite, the lower triangle does NOT slope outward! See you are still struggling with the optical illusion there. Right about the top one though. Check it with a straightedge or ruler

Sorry, should have been more specific:dunce: All the lines in the diagram are straight, but there is a bulge inward on one and outward on the other.
As a previous person said this is caused by the red and green triangles having different gradients;)
