Genuine question: The substation(s) look really old and not well protected at all. What do you think is the reason for these fires? Old technology (overheating, overload, etc.), poor protection against weather and foreign objects (like kids throwing stuff at them or some more sinister activity) or is this just normal that they go off in places?

Sorry, why is there thread about this?

Surely the London Fire Service have to deal with dozens of small fires on a daily basis. Is this one special?

Suspect this is more likely due to cutbacks to maintenance budgets /sweating the assets past their design life, than anything more sinister

Bingo.

One of the people I drive on a regular basis is a salesman for the Siemens Company which supplies electrical equipment (transformers and other such large electrical property) to Power Producing Companies. He is continually lamenting that Power companies don't spend enough to upgrade their equipment causing dangerous situations with the existing power equipment. Of course all we do is complain when our electric bills go up. We never see the need for replacing the old equipment.
