Have watched a bit of baseball lately during the night feeding shift for my daughter. It strikes me that all American sports stop and start a lot - there is now flow like in football, cricket, rugby etc

Why do Americans like sports like that? It makes it unbelievable frustrating to watch.

Why can't they play the sports that everybody else does?

They can fit in the ad breaks that way. What amazes me though is that these sports emerged before telly and the need to sell ads. Were the administrators prescient or what?

So they can stuff their faces full of burgers without missing a second of the action.

Basketball and American Football have gained in popularity during the TV age. Forty years ago basketball wasn't a mass spectator sport.

To state the bleeding obvious, I guess that with baseball the changeover between eacg innings just used to be much quicker. It's a fine sport with a longer history than that of telly.

i hate most american sports(i can tolerate "football") but i hate the pointless stats they come out with

ie.

"chuck davies has a 76% scorebag conversion zone ratio"(i'm not even sure that makes sense, but you get my drift)
also the names piss me off, if they ever do that in england i will stop watching football("brighton seagulls":glare: )

Ice hockey is good to watch for obvious, violent reasons, and basketball is a fantastic game. But american football and baseball are like a foreign language to me I'm afraid

I lived in the US as a youngster and really go into watching baseball, football and hockey and I have been back a number of times over they years. I watched a lot of games live in great atmospheric and quirky stadiums like Wrigley Field in Chicago, surrounded by quirky individuals who would not look out of place in the South Stand bleachers. I think that under all that razamatazz (aka juvenile crap), endless statistical analysis and too frequent stoppages there are some really good sports trying to get out. Fact is most people use the stoppages as an opportunity for a slash.

However, the only thing that I would wish to take to Falmer is the vendors that bring the ice cold beer and hot dogs to your seat.

A foreign language that few Brits bother to learn (nothing new there then!).

Baseball is a fantastic game that only needs to be learned to be enjoyed-in much the same way Americans need to learn the subtleties of Soccer.

Baseball is an absolutely fantastic day/afternoon/evening out. Never any trouble, warm summer evenings, great hotdogs, beer bought to your seat and all as part of three hours entertainment (sometimes less, sometimes more, depending on what's happened/happening during the game) for less than or around 10 bucks in the cheap seats...where's the problem in that? Especially when it's CDN dollars which makes it less than a fiver! Add to that the fact that baseball is a superb game which is no more stop/start than cricket is and you have one damn good value sport affordable to just about everyone. Unlike football in this country which is becoming increasingly more difficult for those less well off to attend.

I am a huge fan of American Football and saw my one and only game in 1991 - Buffalo Bills at Tampa Bay Bucs and to say there is no trouble is rediculous.

I saw countless ejections from the game and about 9 arrests. I think our American friends try to gloss over the real truth.

BTW - brilliant game.
