Amex charge higher transaction fees than the other card companies which for a season ticket could work out ten times more expensive than Visa/Mastercard (percentage versus set fee)

Damn straight.

It worked out about 71p per transaction that I as a retailer had to pay on all credit or debit cards in my shop. It was about £4.70 for AmEx.

The big 4 supermarkets have the credit/debit card transaction fee at about 12p which saves them loadsamoney compared to having bank cash sales.
