Aston Villa defender Alpay did not report for training this morning with the rest of his team-mates at the club's Bodymoor Heath complex.
Alpay and the remainder of the Villa squad had been expected to start preparing for Sunday's derby with Birmingham after being given Monday off to recover after the weekend Euro 2004 qualifiers.
But the Turkish international did not arrive in time for the scheduled 10.30am start as another massive question mark was placed over his Villa future.
Villa have made no official comment as yet about the 28-year-old who has caused furore over his actions towards David Beckham in Saturday's clash in Istanbul.
But he would seem certain to face some kind of disciplinary measures if his absence today had been taken without the permission of David O'Leary.
O'Leary had intended to make no comment about Alpay in his pre-match press conference on Friday - with the same message having been sent out to the players.
Ronny Johnsen's return to fitness means Alpay looks set to be dropped for Sunday's derby with Birmingham.
Johnsen has missed Villa's last four games with a hamstring problem suffered at Manchester City.
But the former Manchester United star is now back in full training and likely to recalled at St Andrews by David O'Leary.
The Johnsen-Olof Mellberg combination has been O'Leary's first-choice pairing since the second game of the season.
Alpay has come under fire for his goading of David Beckham during the Turkey-England Euro 2004 qualifier in Istanbul on Saturday.
And he faces being regarded as public enemy one after his weekend antics.
He has only been used as a stand-in by Villla when injuries have affected the squad.
Meanwhile Villa keeper Thomas Sorensen is also fit to face Blues. He was substituted in the 1-1 draw against Bolton because of a back problem but played for Denmark against Bosnia on Saturday.
England defender John Terry believes Alpay deserves to be a target for fans in the aftermath of the Euro 2004 qualifier in Istanbul.
Turkey defender Alpay taunted David Beckham after the England captain missed a first-half penalty on Saturday.
He poked Beckham in the face as the players headed for the dressing rooms at half-time, and Uefa are now studying video footage of the tunnel bust-up which ensued.
England secured a goalless draw to guarantee their place at next summer's finals in Portugal.
But after the match, Beckham claimed Alpay had made a derogatory remark about his mother.
Alpay's club, Aston Villa, face a trip to Birmingham in the Barclaycard Premiership on Sunday, and Terry told The Sun: "If he gets a load of stick, he only has himself to blame.
"He deserves it as what he did was totally unprofessional - and people will remember that.
"Before the match Alpay was saying things like the Turks will welcome us and there will be no wind-ups from their players.
"Then he says those things to our captain. The English fans won't forget that - whichever club they support."
Alpay's international career looks to be over because of his behaviour during the Euro 2004 qualifier against England.
Turkey coach Senol Gunes told CNN-Turk television: "Alpay cannot play for the Turkish national team under these circumstances.''
Gunes said however, that Alpay did not deserve the criticism he was receiving in the media.
"We have to abandon a player who did wrong, but who served the team for 10 to 15 years, by expressing our gratitude," Gunes said.
Alpay was seen taunting David Beckham after the England captain missed a penalty during Saturday's Euro 2004 qualifier in Istanbul, then jabbed a finger in Beckham's face as they walked off during half-time.
The Turkish defender was involved in a scuffle in the tunnel involving about 50 players and officials.
Press reports quoted Beckham as saying the Turkey defender insulted his mother. On his web site, Alpay denied the accusation.
"When Beckham missed the penalty, I went up to him and said: God is big, justice has been done. If you had shot 100 times, they would all have missed," Alpay said of Beckham's penalty, which sailed over the crossbar.
"At half-time, when we went to the changing rooms, Beckham probably could not stomach what I said and he ran up to me and said something.
"When I was trying to understand what he was telling me, he hit me with his shoulder," Alpay said.
"I got angry and I was about to walk up to him when our security guards intervened and took me away. Whatever happened after that, there was a brawl between our security guards and the English players."
he deserves whats coming to him - unfortunately his pea sized brain couldn't think before his stupid mouth opened - needs a smack back down to size I think...
Sadly, you can bet your hat that Blackburn Rovers' Tugay is also going to get booed and have stuff thrown at him by various burberry capped wankers across the country.
And that, despite the fact that he is a class player who walked away from trouble and was nothing if not sporting on the day itself, consoling Beckham for his penalty miss and immediately after the game ended admitting that the penalty decision was correct.
Simster - agree about Tugay. I noticed that after the game while all the other Turks left the field he went over to Sven and the england players and congratulated them. I hope he doesn't get grief just because of Alpay
I know Alpay was provocative but wasn't Beckham guilty of butting Alpay and not the other way round?
I'm not condoning Alpay's actions, because I do believe he's a complete tosser for what he did during the game but the whole Pro-Beckham anti-Alpay media circus is a bit over the top.
Beckham did react and should be rightly chastised for it, but he's held as some sort of pariah for his behaviour, it's complete wank.
i think alpay is a total tosser for his actions given the whole build up to the game. it seems like his manager, goalkeeper and at least one of his defender's agree. totally irresponsible.
however, i just checked out the sun online for the first time in over a year and was disgusted with all the shit i read there. like a gang of playground bullies planning to beat someone up when they get back from lunch.and all to shift papers. f***ing scum.
Alpay acted (and has done for some time) like a twat.
But as usual, people have gone over the top, stringing up effigies of him over lamp-posts, and The Sun printing coupons for people to send to Doug Ellis urging him to never allow him near British football again.
That is just shit. People did the same to Beckham once remember?
Alpay is an overrated defender who talks shit and acted likea child at the weekend. But nobody hangs Martin Keown or orders him out of the country for the same offence against Van Nistelrooy.
