Just read this in the Argus;

Joel Lynch's hopes of staying in the squad following his promising debut at leftback against Southampton have been dashed.

The 18-year-old is ineligible along with fellow young prospects Tommy Elphick and Dean Cox.

Lynch and Elphick played earlier in the competition for Bognor, Cox for Eastbourne Borough.

None of them would have made the starting line-up but at least two would probably have been on the bench

Now I know these are youth teamers, but it does seem a tad short sighted to allow any of your players to get cup tied whilst on loan. After all you might need them at a later date.

Villa did not allow Henderson to play in the League Cup for us, in case they needed to use him in the competition.

So well done whoever allowed this to happen.

Bit crazy really. Unless their hands were tied, and the clubs wouldn't have taken them on loan, which I doubt very much.

One less game wouldn't have mad emuch difference to these guys unless Brighton wanted them tested against better opposition.

does seem bizarre especially when you have a small squad and the last few seasons has seen youth players come through quickly

Strange really, seems a little short sightted but at the time i spose none of them were really knocking on the first teams door.

Yep, nice one McGhee. Top management.

Twat.
Why are you rounding on him alone? This would have been a management decision, probably instigated by Hinshelwood, in conjunction with Dean Wilkins and Dean White. McGhee and Booker would have had to agree, of course.

At the time, none of the players were in contention for a first-team place, so I'd say that it's well done to both players for forcing their way in. I think we have got all the positions adequately covered for this Saturday's game, something which wasn't the case for Southampton.

Oh okay Alan, let's try to give him as little responsibiity for his actions as possible. Good idea.

Of course he's partially responsible.

But you called him a twat as though it was his fault, and his alone. I assume that you will be fair-minded enough to give Booker, Wilkins, White and Hinshelwood the same 'twat' label you gave McGhee for their part in this matter.

They weren't exactly threatening the first team in September/October when they played and to be fair to MM & Co we do have three players back from suspension and harty from illness so probably only Lynch would make the bench tomorrow.

If we get through hopefully we will have some new signings and hopefully they will not be cup-tied and it won't be an issue.

In life and in management you make decisions which can turn sour 6 months later. Hindsight is a great thing in life!

Buck stops at McGhee here. He would probably have consulted the other guys but the question should surely be whether to let loanees get cup tied in a squad as thin as ours, especially at the back.

That is McGhee's f*** up.

McGhee's clearly not perfect, and he's admitted himself that he's made some f***-ups this season. But until there's a better alternative, I'll still back the fella.

Better the devil you know.

I do not think that you can throw this at MMs door too much. Yes he allowed it to happen but at the time neither he nor his backroom staff or indeed anybody on here have envisaged us being in the piosition of having to rely on Youth team players at this time of the season.

Are Man Utd going to do the same with Paul McShane who is in about the same position to their squad as those players mentioned were to ours.

Starting the season with just Butters and El Abd as RECOGNISED defenders? f***ing hell, Elphick was starting ahead of Mayo.

You can't envisage that you might need youth defenders?

Realistically given a choice wold you want Elphick in the squad if his performance or rather non performance at Reading is anything to go by.

I beleive that MM has made many mistakes but this is not one of them that he could have forseen, he has been trying to buy a defender for some time now. He would have expected to have had Hinsh back by Christmas bar the latest set back.

Also how could he calculate on OGH getting tonsilitus at Christmas.

It is Tommy Elphick, not Gary Elphick that is cup tied.
