Craig Mackail-Smith says he has unfinished business with Albion.
But the record signing is in the dark about whether he will get the chance to prove his worth once his four-year contract expires in June.
Mackail-Smith, recalled to the starting line-up by Chris Hughton for last night’s 2-0 home win over Leeds, has struggled for fitness, form and goals since a £2.5 million move from Peterborough and had 13 months out with Achilles and ankle injuries.
He said: “It’s been really stop-start. I don’t feel I’ve ever really got into my stride to show what I can do. Just before I got injured I was probably showing signs but then the injury came and that’s life, that’s football. Sometimes you fit in a team, sometimes you don’t.
“There has never been a point where I haven’t worked hard to make it work here and my contract is coming up at the end of the season. I don’t know where it’s going to go from here but I know in the next 13 games I will be running my heart out and then we’ll see what happens.”
Mackail-Smith justified his recall by setting up the opening goal for Sam Baldock and constantly stretching the Leeds defence with his running and work-rate.
"I'll have to have a conversation with him at the end of the season. He's come in, he's looking at different players, he'll have players he'll want to bring in in the summer, so I'm just going to work hard, do my best to stay in the team, win some games and see how it goes."
Last night's win has lifted Albion six points above the relegation zone in 18th ahead of Saturday's trip to Bolton Wanderers, who have dropped below them on goal difference.
