Albion's out-of-favour signing Chris O’Grady is expected to stay on loan at Sheffield United for the rest of the season.
O’Grady has expressed his desire to remain in South Yorkshire after scoring in United’s 1-1 draw with Walsall at Bramall Lane on Saturday.
Blades boss Nigel Clough is aiming to keep him for the duration of his team’s League One promotion challenge. Former Albion manager Sami Hyypia recently urged O’Grady, on loan until January, to make his intentions clear about returning to the Amex.
The centre-forward, bought from Barnsley in the summer for £500,000 and awarded a three-year contract, responded after his goalscoring contribution against Walsall by declaring he feels “wanted” by United.
He said: “I would definitely be interested in staying. I just want to enjoy my football and that’s what I am doing right now.
“To just feel wanted is important to me and that’s when I play my best stuff. I feel like that here. Everything is down to Brighton really. They’ll decide, I suppose, what is going to happen next.”
Clough is hoping to stretch O’Grady’s stay through to May.
“That’s the plan in principle, to keep Chris for the rest of the season,” he said. “That’s why I was delighted to see Brighton get a point at Wolves because that might help. If they get injuries, they might call him back.
“Chris has now had 90 minutes on consecutive Saturdays and will need another three or four games to really get up to speed. But I think we have seen enough of him to suggest he is going to be a problem at this level.”
O’Grady’s fellow Albion striker Craig Mackail-Smith, back at Peterborough on loan, made his third appearance without a goal in Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat by Preston.
