Albion were plunged right back into the relegation fight on a deeply depressing afternoon at Blackpool.
The Seagulls went down 1-0 in a desperately scrappy encounter fought out on a hideous playing surface and in a strong, bitingly cold wind.
Meanwhile rivals Millwall beat Nottingham Forest to move to within two points of Chris Hughton's men.
Jamie O'Hara hit the 75th-minute winner with a superb dipping, curling free-kick having previously wasted several set-pieces.
The visitors were unhappy with the free-kick award against Rohan Ince.
Albion created very little although Elliot Parrish made a great first half save from Gordon Greer's header.
