Albion have dropped a place to 17th in the Championship after Eidur Gudjohnsen snatched a late point for Bolton Wanderers today.
The veteran striker's 95th minute header denied doomed Lancastrian neighbours Blackpool an improbable away win in a 1-1 draw.
The other two sides immediately below Albion missed the chance to edge above them.
Reading, requiring a home win to leapfrog Chris Hughton's side, were held to a 1-1 draw by Russell Slade's Cardiff at the Madejski Stadium.
Huddersfield, yet to visit the Amex, also needed a victory to move above Albion.
They were grateful instead for a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.
Blackburn Rovers, beaten by Albion in their last home fixture, warmed up for their FA Cup quarter-final tie at home to Liverpool by beating troubled Leeds 3-0 at Elland Road.
Rovers capitalised on a red card for Rodolph Austin against the Yorkshiremen, who are back in turmoil following the mysterious suspension of assistant head coach Steve Thompson.

Albion are above Huddersfield and Reading on goal difference and nine points clear of the relegation zone with six matches left.Monday's hosts Rotherham are a place and four points clear of the drop zone and five points adrift of the Seagulls.
