Lloyd Owusu celebrates his Easter Monday winner at Colchester
Albion want to make it a rewarding Easter – for the first time since they were on the brink of League Two.
The Seagulls have failed to win any of their last eight Easter game, including those which were moved forward or back a day or two away from the Bank Holiday weekend to ease fixture congestion.
Lloyd Owusu kicked off the Great Escape by heading home the only goal at Colchester on Easter Monday 2009.
And that was their last success at this time of year.
Under Gus Poyet’s management, Albion drew at home to Southampton on Maunday Thursday and lost at Hartlepool on Easter Monday in 2010.
Hartlepool later had the points taken off them as punishment for fielding the suspended Gary Liddle.
Albion had the League One title secure by Easter 2011, when they lost 2-1 at home to Southampton on Saturday and drew 1-1 at Colchester on Monday.
Poyet made sure the Seagulls had plenty of rest between Easter fixtures as they pushed for the play-offs in their first season at the Amex two years ago.
But it did not help matters as they lost 1-0 both away to Burnley on Good Friday and at home to Reading the following Tuesday.
They*should have ended their wait for an Easter win last season as they drew 2-2 at Nottingham Forest.
Casper Ankergren made several fine saves but then let in a soft injury-time equaliser.
Albion’s Easter Monday game was pushed back to the following evening and Ben Hamer helped Charlton secure a 0-0 draw.
