Ok it's The Mail so an element of arms length however it's a major article regarding the supply of hard drug's in the B & Hove area. It's fair to say that unfortunately like almost everywhere the drug issue blights everyday life, but is it any worse in Brighton?

The first tranche of Albanian criminals arrived a while back. These were the generals. They had with them, some young women, promised a new life in a foreign land. These were the first source of income. They became prostitutes on the streets. Drug dependent and cheap and helpless. They all had a fairly short shelf life. These were either rounded up by the police or died from nasty drug cocktails or simply disappeared and were quickly replaced.
After realising how easy it was to cross the Channel, the foot soldiers started arriving, in their hundreds and hundreds. They set to work in the black economy, stealing vehicles, stealing catalytic convertors, stealing expensive cabling and stealing anything else of perceived value. They also killed and ate swans, pleading ignorance of our laws. Most of them under the radar.
Drugs were largely the preserve of the black community a few years ago. Still is, in some places. Then, young Pakistani men saw an opportunity before the nasty ones arrived. Albanians don't take any prisoners. Now they are established. The new Mafia in this country.
I live within a large town that has strong Albanian presence. Powerful and menacing. They have a foothold. They ain't going away.

With the tacit complicity of successive governments, there’s no tax, no paperwork, huge rewards, an ever growing customer base as people who can’t afford legal highs turn to untaxed, cheaper alternatives and even when the police do manage to cut off one route and one supply chain, there are already others that simply bring more into the country.

Nobody who wants this stuff is going short. Legalise it, tax it, ban its promotion, ensure the product’s safety and plough a significant percentage of the money into education and addiction services for those who do succumb to addiction.

Our current stance is comically unintelligent, the genie is not going back into the bottle.

In every city, town and village in the country according to a bloke I used to work with. He used to give talks in schools about his life story, which included being a part of a drug gang in Hastings. That was 25 years ago.
