In memory of England cricketer Ben Hollioake 'The Journey': His brother Adam pledges to help raise £5miilion over five years to help life limited children.
Adam Hollioake: Journey
Edinburgh 2nd October 2003: Adam's Journey begins - a 2,000 mile trip from Edinburgh to Tangiers walked, sailed and cycled by England Cricketer Adam Hollioake.
When the young England and Surrey cricketer Ben Hollioake was tragically killed in a car accident in March 2002, his family set up the Ben Hollioake Memorial Fund and pledged to devote the next five years raising £5million towards a CHASE Centre for life limited children in London.
In association with CHASE Children's Hospice Services they want to create an everlasting memory to Ben Hollioake's name. Ben was a well-known sportsman, voted Young Cricketer of the Year and aged 19, was the youngest England debutant since 1949. All the money raised from 'The Journey' will go to the Ben Hollioake Memorial Fund.
The UK leg of 'The Journey' involves 594 miles to walk across 28 days averaging nearly 30 miles per day. There will be Evening Receptions held at cricket clubs along the route* where supporters and press can meet Adam and raise money for the Ben Hollioake Fund.
On the 1st October 'The Journey' is launched at the City Chambers, High Street, Edinburgh with the Lord Provost. Adam will be joined for the whole trip by ex professional cricketer Matthew Church, European Heavyweight Champion Scott Welch and Lancashire Cricketer Ian Sutcliffe. Members of the public are invited to join in with 'The Journey' at any stage.
On Saturday the 1st November at Brighton Marina 'The Journey' participants set sail for Dieppe on board the Ocean Youth Trust boat. 'The Journey' then wends its way by cycle from Dieppe to Gibraltar and from Gibraltar to Tangiers. Following a boat crossing between Gibraltar and Tangiers 'The Journey' will end on the 24th November with a Reception in N.Africa.
13th December 2003: The Ben Hollioake CHASE Ball at The Hilton, Park Lane, London.
Adam Hollioake is a patron of CHASE; the charity began in 1994 to support life-limited children and their families in Surrey, South-West London and parts of Sussex. CHASE Children's Hospice Service is dedicated to the support of children who are not expected to reach their 19th birthday.
For these children there is at present no hope of a cure but they and their families still need care and support over the their life ahead of them. CHASE offers this vital service at no cost to the families 24 hours a day, every day of the year, in whatever way it is needed, emotionally or practically, at home or at Christopher's - the purpose built children's hospice near Guildford.
