[News] 50p Coins - rare ones?

Was clearing out a box in my cupboard this afternoon and came some old/patterened coins (mostly 50p's) I had set aside years ago as I thought they were nice to keep. Got the whole set of Olympic 50p coins from a few years ago and one or two others that I didn't know I had.

Came across a Kew Gardens one which I'm sure I read in a magazine was quite rare. Are these coins worth keeping or should I just spend them now as they are only gathering dust. Also came across the old £2 coin from the Euro's in 1996 (the old large style).

you'll get more than face value plus postage on ebay, the Kew one goes for silly money if in uncirculated condition.

They are worth a minimum of 50 pence

I have had a few rare ones but the only place I have ever been offered more than face value is ebay, even then not a lot more. Mrs TC collects the Beatrix Potter editions. I suppose a complete collection would be worth more than the sum of it's parts but these ones seem to crop up often, I usually get at least one a month given as change.

ebay appears to have sold them in the range £8 to £100. Condition comes into it.

those Kew coins for a few quid are copies, made for people to complete collections. the Kew 50p was very low mintage even for a special issue, 200k vs 2millon plus for next rarest.

I collect British coins and banknotes, the most recent authentic Kew Gardens 50p has gone for £133 on eBay.
It wasn’t uncirculated, and not in prime condition. The 1996 Euro Football £2 is worth about 5-6 quid,
But, as with anything, they are only worth what people will pay.

If your Olympic set is in the official collectors album, it can go for up to £150, about half that without the official album.If you look on eBay, look for the items that have had bids, you will always get chancers who put non rare coins on for stupid money, but, the ones with bids are what people will pay for them.

I went on ebay to see how much they are worth.

£2. Disappointing.

My brother's an antique dealer and I'm always shocked by how little
value he attaches to things which I think would be worth a fortune. And things
you think would be worth nothing are worth loads.

When the new plastic £5 notes came out and early numbered ones were being snapped up by collectors I recall some folks listing them on ebay but with starting prices of less than £5 and ending up selling them for £3.50 or whatever. Buyers must have been laughing their socks off.

These prices are what coins have actually sold for on EBay, not what the sellers value them at.( Two very different things in a lot of cases.)

Kew 50p mintage 210,000. One sold this weekend for £133
Sir Isaac Newton 50p mintage 1,801,500. Current price £2.67. Second lowest non-Olympic mintage.
Jemima Puddleduck 50p mintage 2,100,000. Current price £10.17. Most valuable of the Beatrix Potter series.

Olympic 50p

Football offside rule 50p mintage 1,125,500. Current value £9.98
Wrestling 50p mintage 1,129,500. Current value £5.61
Judo 50p mintage 1,161,500. Current value £7.95
Triathlon 50p montage 1,163,500. Current value £6.43
All the other Olympic coins are valued at under £2 each.


Old round pound coin.

Edinburgh £1 coin mintage 935,000. Current value £6.68,
Every other round pound under £3 except 1999 Scottish Lion rampant, current value approx £30 as it was only issued in sets.


£2 coin

The first single metal £2 coins
Tricentennial of the claim of Rights, mintage 381,400. Only issued in Scotland, current value £28.03
United Nations £2 mintage 1,668,575. Current value £11.00
Euro 96 Football £2 coin, mintage 5,141,350 Current value £6.89

Bi-metal £2 coin

Commonwealth games 2002, Nortern Ireland £2 coin, mintage 485,500. Current value £31.83

The other 3 Home countries 2002 Commonwealth games £2 coins approx between 7-12 pounds
All other £2 coins between £2-£5
Two that may increase in price in the future are the 2015 Britannia coin, mintage 650,000, and the First World War Royal Navy coin, mintage 650,000, both low mintage, and neither at their correct value at the moment.

The rarest of all post decimalisation British coins is the European Market large (old) 50p, mintage 109,000, year of issue 1992, current value £50.

I hope this helps anyone who might have a fortune down the back of the settee.



There is one more rare and expensive (relatively speaking) British coin, the 2008 new shield design 20p piece. An unknown amount were minted without a date on the coins, they now change hands for up to £100.
It’s the only decimal coin, that I don’t have, and it’s a real pain checking every 20p I get in the hope of finding one.
