... the world witnessed the Kent State shootings.

This will probably mean nothing to the younger people on NSC but this was a shocking event. I was only 13 at the time but still remember being absolutely gobsmacked that young people could be shot down in cold blood in the name of the law. It still does.

Neil Young called it best.
"Tin soldiers and Nixon coming/We're finally on our own/This summer I hear the drumming/Four dead in Ohio."

Possible modern day context...

Imagine thousands of Brighton fans on the march outside the party conference to plead for Falmer, and then have the army open fire on you.

Good analogy...although the real horror of KSU was that some of the people hit weren't even protesting.

I can still scarcely believe that in a democracy armed soldiers will fire on unarmed civilians, but the evidence is clear that they will.

Heard something about this on the news today.

It's one of those stories froma time when i was much younger and World affairs had little meaning but a truly shocking story.

The original news footage is truly shocking.

Not up there with Tiananmen Square, but these were supposed to be the "good guys".
