5th May 1979. Newcastle was a sea of blue and white as the mighty Seagulls were promoted to the 1st Division for the first time ever after a 3-1 victory.

Wasn't there but wish I had been. Had to make do with commentary from the legendary Peter Jones on Radio 2.

God I feel old...

I hear you've still got a bit of life in you, although I'd appreciate it if you could avoid demonstrating it in Chester. :D

This raises a (more wholesome) thought in my mind.

There must be three sorts of Albion supporter:-

1. People who became supporters at a time when it seemed incredible that the Albion would EVER play at the highest level;

2. People who first became supporters when we WERE playing at the highest level;

3. People who first became supporters when we were a team that USED to play at the highest level.

What are you?

I'm in category 1.

Promotion to the first division went some way towards compensating for Thatcher becoming prime minister a few days earlier. I guess tory-voting seagulls felt much the same about the Hereford result making up for Blair's victory.

Halfway between 1 & 2, my Lord.

My first Albion memories were from the season BEFORE us being promoted from the old Division 3 behind Mansfield Town. I never thought it was 'incredible' us playing in the top flight. My first few years of the Albion were of me not being used to seeing the Albion lose. Top flight football seemed if not a formality, then certainly achievable.

I remember being excited by the result at Newcastle (I was nine at the time), but I remember being far more excited at 4.55pm on May 3, 1997.

I'm afraid I'm in number three, although maybe my generation of Seagulls will eventually have their own number one and be able to say "Yeah, I was there for the dark days, so getting stuffed 5-1 by Arsenal really doesn't hurt too much!"

Oh what a day .... superb, superb, superb .... travelled back after the game to Wakefield (where I was doing a postgrad) absolutely trolleyed!!!

Partied all weekend and met my first wife that night .... remember at the end of the year telling a friend what a great year it had been - Albion in Div 1, met a girl I was gonna marry and Thatcher was elected !!!!!!!

At least one out of three still thrills me now!

Same here Brackers .... my time was 1967 when Spurs, Leeds and Man Utd were on a different planet from us 3rd division mortals!

Moi aussi. My first Albion game was sometime in early 1966. Can't tell you when or against who but it was definitely before England won the World Cup. As my old Boundstone friend says the thought of games against the likes of Spurs, Leeds and Man U seemed as likely as regular fixtures against Brazil.
