Just back from my local (and fecking MASSIVE) tescos. Completely empty except for the single security guard, the single cashier and the builders redoing the layout.

However, Tesco say its sucessful enough, they're considering opening 24/7 (currently its 7 am Monday to 10 PM Saturday, normal opening Sunday)

Anyone else here go shopping at odd hours?

You're 'just' back from your 'local' Tesco, which closes at 10.00 and you post at 1.07. That's either an interesting definition of 'just' or your local supermarket is on the Aran islands :)

I'm in two minds. On the one hand, it's useful having a supermarket that's open at odd times (and I'd have loved it as a student. On the other hand, I hate shopping at supermarkets, they have too much power and I avoid them wherever I can. The trouble is that my local supermarket is the only place open when I come home from work so I have no choice.

I've been in supermarkets at odd hours in the US and there's something very spooky about it. There are generally only a couple of other people in it and they look like weirdos (although they're probably thinking the same thing).

I've lived in areas where the supermarkets are open for 24 hours. I've also spent a considerable amout of time in the US and have to say that it's very handy being able to shop 24/7.

In the US shops are open longer (even in the sticks where I am) so the supermarkets, whilst not as full as during the day) tend to have customers at all times.

The only spooky thing is Christmas Day when everything is shut.

When i used to work shifts i would often go shopping at 2 or 3am. I think the way Tesco's look at it, they have to have the lights etc on anyway to stock-up so the extra handfull of staff needed to run the operation 24hrs is worth it.

The one near me in Eastbourne is meant to be one of the biggest in the South East and even at 3am there is a fair few people in there.

The one at Ipswich is a lot bigger but probably isn't South East. Has anyone else been to the Asda Walmart in Bristol? It's like 3 or 4 Eastbourne Tesco's or Asda Brighton's put together.

As far as Walmart is concerned they're mostly like that but there again lland prices in the US are usually considerably less than here and they have plenty of space to throw up these places. They're 24/7 but the thing that surprised me was the fact that you can buy just about anything except alcohol.

This varies from state to state but it's a bit odd to me to walk into an establishment like that and not even see any beer.

Weirdest one I ever saw was whilst driving though some obscure twonship in Missisippi, a supermarket called 'Piggly Wiggly', anybody else ever seen one ? I always thought they were an urban mith until then.

Or it's open 7am Monday through to 10pm Saturday without closing :dunce:

I think it's a good idea. The staff have to work there anyway to stack the shelves so people are there and everything has to be on. Therefore they only have to employ a couple of extra staff which at Tesco rates means they only have to take £10 - £20 to cover their costs. If I worked lates or nights I'd definately shop when I finished and take advantage of the tranquility of my local Tesco.

Yes, thats what I meant.

I assumed as much this morning, but then "However, Tesco say its sucessful enough, they're considering opening 24/7" doesn't make sense, since given our Sunday opening laws, 7am Mon. - 10pm Sat. is about as close as you can get to 24/7 currently...

Note that I'm not in the UK. We have no Sunday Trading Laws in Ireland.
